if you check out the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. preview at xbitlabs, it appears the 256MB cards are much faster than their 128MB counterparts.. So that actually may be one of the first games that will benefit from 256MB ram. Then again, 9600 256MB plain sucks.

whats wrong with doing the same for video cards if you can afford it?

A gig of RAM really helps some games.

Especially when you consider Windows is using at least 100... so now you only have 412 left for the game. Load up a huge ass map in Desert Combar or something and you'll run out of RAM real quick.

9600
9600 Pro
9600 XT

all with latest cat drivers.

And I don't get nvidia --

5600, 5600XT, 5600SE, 5600 Ultra, 5700 Ultra(is there a non ultra too?), 5900 for the same price as the 5700. All the drivers work differently offering different performances and different IQ capabilities etc etc..

ATI is actually simple to me. I have no idea whats going on with Nvidia. Nvidia by all means makes good hardware, but the musical chairs bit has me growing tiresome. And I really don't know how the simple customer can keep up with it. Matter of fact, I just read from one of the board members here that he is displeased with the performance of a 5600XT. When , in fact, it's a stripped down version of the regular 5600 and he was unaware of it.

And I bet you can pick one up VERY cheap now :)

9500 pro.............yeah i got one of those too and is a very sweet card......but he's gonna have to look very very hard or make one himself if he was gonna get one.

dont think theres any new ones about, best bet is 2nd hand and i doubt theres gonna be loads of them too, considering how good it is for the money
