I need an extended desktop using two monitors, will this adapter suffice?

Uh, why not just hook both monitors up to your graphics card?

If the video card only has 1 VGA connector, then you'd need an adapter.

Will this adapter display the same thing or can I use an extended desktop (i.e. double my desktop space)

All that is, is a signal splitter, literally two wires connected to the same input. It will only display the same image on both monitors. For multiple monitors there are signal processing units built to do that, but it would be wayyyyyy cheaper to just get a card on FS/FT for $20.
