I usually go with HP, but I want to know if the other brands are better. I am not looking for ultra cheap. I want something nice, that works well under windows XP, and has the option of a sheet feeder.

Thanks for any helpful input you may provide.

I would suggest checking out the Epson 1650 USB Scanner works excellent and is plenty fast for a SOHO user. I also like the software which is included for editing.

Unless you want to keep with the HP, which costs a premium usually, I would also go with the Epson. It has very high rating in comparison to other scanners, it has an affordable cost, the sheet feeder and negative scanner and it does a very nice output.

My boss came to me around Xmas to ask my advice on scanners and her choices were Epson or HP. I wanted to go HP until I saw some of the specs of the Epson and the user comments on it. I would now buy the Epson myself.

I have an entry level HP scanner. While the hardware is excellent and does a much better job on grabbing colors than my old Umax, the software blows. The HP driver doesn't save certain settings so you have to re-enter choices everytime you start a new session. The Umax software was much better. Also, with the HP you have to interact with the PC for each scan -- there's no way to scan a bunch of things and cue 'em up -- the HP driver doesn't seem to allow that.

Maybe their high-end stuff is better?

Yeah for the software problems alone I will never buy another HP scanner.

Another complaint: I noticed there's a new driver out for my scanner. So I go to get it. It's 41 MB! C'mon, 41 MB for a scanner driver?!
