2 things I'd like to correct from various posts here:

- better NOT to caulk around the base of the toilet because when the wax ring fails (every few years), you'll want to know when your waste is being spewed all underneath the toilet. Or just switch to a sani-seal instead of a wax ring... good stuff.

- do not go for the Kohler Cimmaron line from Lowes. We bought one of those and a Kohler Highline and the latter performs much better. The Cimmaron lever needs to be held down an extra second to flush and that's a HUGE pain in the ass over many uses. It also seems slightly too tall. EDIT>> yup it's 1/4" taller than Highline.

Absolutely agree. Also on a plywood sub-floor, it's nice to catch it before it rots the wood underneath.

Ahh... Makes perfect sense. I just checked mine and I do have a 12" rough-in. Thank you for your help. I feel a bit more at ease now.

I'm so glad that I responded and posted a link to the toilet that I bought. I didn't realize that a brand new almost $300 toilet didn't come with a seat. So, I ordered one of their seats also.

I have been considering a Comfort Height toilet as well. Now I'm not so sure. How tall are you Eug?

Well, Lowe's must be better than HD for Weber grills, then. We bought our Weber gas grill from Lowe's and amazingly, it indeed came with stainless burners. Imagine that!

And if the Weber grills aren't being sent with stainless burners, you may have a lawsuit against HD as every single advert they run for the Weber grills they sell specifically state stainless burners.

I really doubt there is a single Weber gas grill without a stainless burner as Weber adverts that feature ad nauseum in their own ads. Don't think they advertise such a feature, have HD put it in their ads, and then ship HD something completely different.

Here's a link to Weber's site and gas grill lineup. Don't see the small print that says stainless burners are in all our gas grills except those sold through HD and Lowe's, etc. You'd thin it'd be a case of false advertisement if Weber did just that.

I think what you posted is personal to your experience. I replaced all three of the toilets in my house with Kohler Cimmarons and they have been great. Haven't had any of the issues you mentioned.

Also, how many times do you use the toilet where you are in such a hurry that you can't wait a second for the thing to flush?

Yeah, I'm only 5'7". My wife is 5'2". Note though "normal height" toilets range in height just as "comfort height" toilets do.

A comfort height toilet might be anywhere from < 1" taller to 4" taller. A tall normal height comes close to a short comfort height toilet. (I wouldn't get a short "normal height" toilet either.)

My regular height toilets are about 16 1/4 inches tall including seat. IIRC the comfort height ones start at 17" and go as high as 19".

So, I'm wondering if I should buy an extra one to have on hand. Frankly, I can't imagine the seat failing completely that I'd need to have one to swap on right away, but I figured that I'd ask.

Also, is there any difference in mounting this toilet? A co-worker told me that he bought a Toto and he ended up selling it rather than modifying his bathroom. But, he thinks his was a peculiar case. So, I figured that I'd ask.

My toto slow close seat has held up fine. However I'm not a huge fan of the shape. Luckily you can often just buy a seat from another company. For one kohler toilet I put on an American Standard slow close seat I found at Home Depot because it was cheaper. It has held up fine too. The main drawback is that the shade of white is not a 100% match. Despite my OCD tendencies, I got over it in a couple of days esp. since it meant saving $$. I don't think other people even notice the slide shade difference.

Bemis makes slow close removable toilet seats. They can be found locally, thats what I have.

It's extremely annoying even though it's in my kids' bathroom and I use it once in a blue moon. Because I don't always remember I have to hold it down and actually have to flush it again. Even if I did remember, it's like having to hold down your talk or end button on your phone. Why???????????????????????????????

As for if it's just me, I went back and read the reviews after I realized it was happening and I wasn't the only one. That's why I believed it's the line. Those who didn't complain about it could just be used to it from other toilets - you can't tell.

When did you put yours in? We bought ours in 2010 and maybe the newer models fixed the issue.

EDIT> One other complaint I have about it compared to the Highline is the lever itself. It's thin and narrow and it's not comfortable to flush considering it's also got some resistance to it. Bottom line, the Highline is comparatively better.

I installed one in 2010, one in 2011, and one in 2014. They have all performed well and identically for me. Only issue I had was during the install of the one in 2010 , and that was more a problem with my house than with the toilet. The idiot who built my house didn't install the closet flange properly and it was sticking up ~1/4-1/2" above the floor. There are all sorts of fixes available when the flange is too low. But almost none (that I could find) for when the flange is too high. The only one I could find involved shimming up the whole toilet with a piece of painted MDF or plywood. IMO that would look like crap, so I elected to cut the old flange out and install a new one because the Cimarron would not sit flush to the floor with the original flange. Was a royal PITA (and a stinky one too). But again, not really an issue with the toilet so much as with my house.

Just another note about the ADA/comfort height toilets:

I said you can test in-store by sitting on them, but you can also test in a public washroom in a wheelchair accessible stall.

However I will point out that unfortunately, it's not quite the same as having one in the house. At home I usually go barefoot. At the store, or at a public washroom, I'm often wearing shoes. That may mean say a 1" difference. That 1" may mean the difference between comfortable and uncomfortable.

However, if you're tall (and everyone else in the house is tall), ADA height will probably be fine and even preferable.
