I need a radio that can pick up AM stations well

I am currently working in a room with no windows and I can not tune in any AM stations. The radio can pick up AM stations fine just outside the door, so I need to figure out a way to listen to some sports radio while I try to not bang my head off of the desk and knock myself out, ending my boredom.

Are there certain types of radios that will pick up the AM signal better?

You probably need one with an external Antenna, something you could place in a window if not outside.

Maybe find a shortwave radio, they usually have an external Ant and hook up a loop antenna at a window.

You might find some useful tips here.

How the hell are you "currently working" in a room with no internet access and posting on AT?

There's no way you're going to know if a radio will work in that room unless you know a whole bunch of technical mumbo jumbo like what materials are between you and the outside (structure, etc), what AM stations are close enough to you, how much power their broadcast puts out, how much the building materials will cut down the signal, blah blah blah blah blah and pit that against the strength of the radios that you have access to.

Just buy a stronger radio. If that doesn't work, get another one. You could always do something elaborate like having an antenna somewhere outside and pipe the signal down to a radio somehow... who knows. Go away, I'm cranky.

Hell, I could use info on this as well. Every office I've ever worked in has had shoddy radio reception in general. AM/FM it doesn't matter. Any general info would be helpful.

i've been very happy listening to AM sports radio with my tivoli radio. it does a good job catching the signal. although i'm sure it varies with location.

GE Superradio III is great for picking up weak signals. Unfortunately in my experience it's also great at picking up RF noise when around computers. I can't have mine within 20 feet of a computer. You said you can get reception outside your room, perhaps what would work better than a better AM radio beside you is a FM radio - and an FM transmitter attached to a radio outside the room. FM band isn't affected nearly so much computers...only real downside here is that you'd have to leave the room to change stations. But it doesn't sound like a room one would mind leaving now and then.

The CCrane is nice, a tad pricey.

GE also make s a Super-Tuner AM radio (nice FM fidelity too, the earphone jack is stereo) for ~US$35-40.00.

Runs on AC or "D" cells, table-radio / portable.

I've had one for a while, still very sensitive, still sounds great.
