I am building a PC for a friend, and I am in dire need of a quiet P4 hsf for a P4 2.53. Any good budget conscious options out there?

IMHO, the heatsink which comes with the retail P4 cpu's (free!) is a more than adequate cooling solution, and it is pretty hard to beat in the cooling/quiet ratio.

I picked up a Zalman CNPS7000-AlCu for $29.99 at svc.com last week. Even at full speed you can barely hear it, and it isn't breaking a sweat cooling my 2.4C @ 3.0GHz. Not sure if $30 is in your budget, but it's a great HSF in my opinion.

I am running the stock cooler and it's great. I'll take the lower noise over the louder/better performing heatsinks anyday. 2.4c @ 3.3GHz rock solid. I can go to 3.47 stable (but much hotter), but the memory runs slower (2/3 ratio vs 4/5 at 3.3GHz)

My advice? Do like ErikaeanLogic said and go stock. If you need a stock cooler, I've got 3 spares. I'll sell you one cheap. PM me if you're interested. And quit buying those OEMs! jk :D
