I have a nice Gerber pocket knife that is always dull. I have a sharpening stone of my great-grandfathers, but I am no good with it. It never gets sharp.

I would love to find a sharpener that I can set the angle or is preset for at least a beveled edge. Also, not too expensive!

Anyone have any expertise in the area?

Well a stone is ideal but it'll take a while to get good with. For a quick and dirty method I've used this little handheld plastic yellow thing that works well. It's got two slots you can drag the knife through. One is a rough carbide side and the other is a finer ceramic side. It's probably what you're looking for.

Here ya go

Only $4.

These work really well. The one I have has just the ceramic rods which is really all you need for general use and you just touch up the blade with a few strokes every few times you use it. You don't want to use the carbide side unless you really dull the blade or damage the edge as it will remove quite a bit of material with frequent use.

The Spyderco was a little more than I wanted to spend, but I found it new at amazon for $47! That may be what I end up going with.

I will most definitely pick up one, as that is always good to keep around!

Anyone else have any recommendations before I pull the trigger?

A finer alternative would be to get it professionally done. That will typically keep the edge a lot longer, the plastic sharpeners will grind down the blade a LOT and you'll end up buying a new knife.

In the end, just buy a ceramic knife - takes forever to go dull. I need to get my Smith & Wesson SWAT sharpened, been using it to open cans at home :(

I use mine so much ever day that it would be highly cost prohibitive to get it sharpened professionally.

Nothing dulls a knife like using it to dig into clay soil repeatedly!

Maybe a spade would be a better tool for the job? :D

I use this to keep my Benchmade Mini-Griptillian sharp.

The Sharpmaker is hands down the best sharpener I've ever used. I cannot say enough good things about it. However, it isn't the best for repairing or reprofiling severely dulled blades. For that I'd recommend a set of DMT bench stones. For routine maintenance you really can't go wrong with the Sharpmaker. Try www.newgrahamknives.com. They have great prices and great service.
