I need a PC game to play

Well the game has horrible visual problems on my computer and I don't know why. For starters the water is a rainbow color that slows down the frame rate horribly. From what I've seen of farcry, I think hl2 looks better.
edit: Is Deus Ex still worth getting? I've only heard of it recently.

I had that bug when I tried manually setting how the game should look, but letting it configure it automatically fixed the rainbow bug for me. Deus Ex is definitely worth getting for anyone IMO. It's the best game ever created.

farcry was a pretty good game, but it's a little overrated imo. It is an older game and I only played it recently so I might be making a biased opinion about the game.

It may be older but it's still the best looking game for the PC.

That game actually looks pretty darn good.

Agreed. It's the only game I would actually turn HDR on in. Every other games HDR could give you sunburns while playing it, or it blurs stuff in a very annoying way.

Far Cry is very good, but Riddick and SCCT are both overall better in my opinion.

I didn't care much for Far Cry's HDR. It looked great in some places but often didn't work properly and made things look ridiculous. The only game in which I actually like the HDR is SCCT, which has the high contrast colors but not the overdone dynamic bloom seen in most other games.

Get it. Now. 🙂

HL2 has great HDR too.

Play World of Warcraft. Now, you may say, "It's an MMO!", but the thing is... you don't HAVE to play with other people. When leveling a character, I rarely play with others as most are doofuses and don't know how to play (yes, I've had way too many bad experiences with other players). Plus, this tends to keep people enthralled for a long time so no need to worry about finding a new game for awhile.

Mmm in a true single player game... I usually only play those on my XBOX 360 so I can't really give you great advice although I did start playing Freedom Fighters a bit ago and it was kinda fun.

Since most of the good recent releases have been mentioned and people are bringing up the best of the past, I'll throw in No One Lives Forever 2 (from the same people who later made F.E.A.R.). One of the best FPS ever, has a high comedic element, runs super smooth at even the highest settings on modern hardware and the graphics aren't really all that dated looking either. NOLF1 is also excellent, but looks dated these days. Another excellent FPS no one has mentioned so far is QUAKE 4. It's a pure FPS, with no real innovation and little plot, but excels at what it does and a lot of people on here consider it far superior to Doom 3.

Gimmee some recommendations.

EDIT: Please describe the games a bit if you can.
Thanks. 🙂

Far Cry
First person shooter-type
I really enjoyed this game. Best gfx I've seen to date (I love the tropical island-type stuff, am trired of dark/dingy indoor crap). It had a lot of replayability for me. Is fun to mess around with the pyshics engine part - shooting stuff and moving it around. Also has some real cool/interesting night scenery as well.

PainKiller & expansion pack - Battle out of H3ll.
First person shooter-type
Again, fairly good gfx. I found it to be like a series of different games (differtn settings/places and enemies & challenges). It ghas a lot replayability for me too. After you play oce, try to get the cards and find the secret places etc. May need to look at a walk-through to pick uyp the hardest stuff.

Deus Ex.
Combo: first person shooter type with role playing elements. Open ended style (you can make "moral choices" which affect the game).

Won tons of awards. Ground-breaking gameplay. Imitated often, never duplicated. Gfx are dated, I belive there are updates/improvements from the mod community. Most absorbing game I've ever played. Multiple endings, replay value. Best game ever (sysem shock 2, close second).

Enjoy,
Fern

Civilization 4.

I hope you've heard of the Civilization series before. 🙂 You could literally play this game for the rest of your life.

Yeah, I totally forgot about this game. I heard that's a good one.
edit: The Sims was definatly the most fun I've ever had with a pc game. I played that game for years on my old rig. I kind of got tired of it after a few years.

Hah, good luck with that one. Single-player FPS's are hard to find.

FEAR: FPS with japanese horror elements. Good action. Great.

HL2: Episode 1: Continues the story a little bit. More fun than HL2. Great.

PREY: Your world gets attacked by aliens and you try to save your woman from their clutches. This game lasts less than 6 hours. More puzzles than action in the FPS. Sucked, especially since I payed almost 60 bucks for it.

Doom3: Scary atmosphere. Hell attacks and you're left all alone to escape in Mars, away from all humanity... in the darkness. Long game: 23 hours. Great.

Battlefield 2: Expensive and buggy. Multiplayer only. Can be fun though.

Far Cry: Fun and challenging. Amazing graphics. Great.

Call of Duty 2 & 3: FPS based on WWII. remember that word: ACTION. Great.

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay: Title says it all. Fresh take on FPS. Great.

Deus Ex: Never finished it, required lots of reading.

Quake4: Action without great motivation to do so. Good, for 20 bucks.

No one lives forever 1 & 2: Secret agent chick. I found them boring.

PainKiller: Shoot, shoot, shoot... everything. Collect money and souls. OK game.

I think Prey is an awesome game, I've been playing it nonstop lately, it's def. one of the best fps I've ever played, I can't imagine it having any replay value though.
Most people do find bugs in bf2, but I've been lucky about that lately. Try the demo first OP then see if you like BF2.

Nope, can't say I did.
Like I said before, I'm not really much of a gamer.

Thanks guys.
Farcry should be cheap now too.
Do stores still carry it?
I went to Walmart and they didn't have it.

My local eb games has it. I have no idea where you might find one though other than a store with a lot of pc games.

List of games. They are pretty much what everyone's been saying (at least most of them).
In no particular order except Company of Heroes which is first and really is first in my books.

Company of Heroes:
WWII (yes, another WWII game) RTS game.
Nothing like it out there, so nothing really to compare it to. Really gotta check that one out.
It really is Fsck'n great 😀
Seriously, nothing really tops this on my list.

Medieval 2: Total War
Like Rome Total War just now in middle ages. Doesn't really bring that revolutionary step that RTW did, but still, gotta check it out.

Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion (+ the expansion)
-nuff said. If you don't get it, you have issues.

Prey:
Thought it was alright. I do not equate Prey=awesome though as some have said.
OpenGL so it runs good on Nvidia cards 🙂

Call of Duty 2:
Can remember when this came out, but if you haven't tried it, give it a shot.
I consider it better then the original (although some will disagree)

HL2: EP1
Short. Thats about it.
It was good. But if valve wants to do this whole "episode thing" then they might want to pick up the pace on releasing the games.

Can't really think of any new games but I can go on and on about good older games 😛

Well, I didn't find Far Cry but I found Civilization 3, which so far seems pretty damn good.
It's a bit too complicated and has a big learning curve but it sure seems like fun.

Civ 3 and 4 are my favorite games of all time, bar none. If you want advice, I'll be happy to talk. Also, www.civfanatics.com

Thanks, I know I'll be PMing you.
It's complicated getting started.
This is like Risk and Monopoly rolled into one, plus alot more fun.

As a gamer I am always a generation behind as I can't afford 40 bucks for a new game.

My 2 cents:
I just finished Call of Duty 2 and FarCry.
Both were seriously fun to play with a lot of game play.
I got a lot of bang for my buck.

Thanks to everyone for weighting in.
I am going to pick up a couple of these games now that they a in the budget bin.

I am really looking forward to Call of Duty 3.
