here's the challenge: can someone tell me a good place to find a decent brand NIC and a 6000+rpm case fan all under 20 bones?

You may be able to socre a 3c905 for that much. That is pretty much one of the best nics on the planet. Try a local PC outfit. They have OEM versions that are cheaper. Look for a used one somewhere.
