Strongly recommended and vaguely in order of preference:
Sopranos
band of brothers
firefly
buffy
west wing
battelstar galactica (just starting to plough my way thru now, pretty good)

lowering the bar a bit:
24 (first couple of seasons very good but then gets silly)
lost (1st season good other than too little happens, 2nd dire, 3rd it really gets going)
Heroes
Alias
CSI (vegas/original)
Curb Your Enthusiasm (constantly fluctuates between hilarious and just painful)
4400

Not sure if the following are worth renting but I look these out if I'm watching the TV:
House
Scrubs
My Name is Earl

First season of Nip/Tuck was very promising but I lost all interest in the second season.

I have Arrested Development and Dexter outstanding on my rental list, adding How I Met Your Mother now :)

Stargate SG-1. It will take you a while though as there are 10 seasons.

I usually don't watch anything unless it has a couple of seasons out on DVD already. I have heard good things about The Wire, and took a chance and rented the first disc tonight. I am waiting for season three of BSG to move to the dollar rental shelves before renting that one, I have watched everything up to that point.

Are there any series that stand out in your mind as being exceptional?

just finished 3rd season of The Wire. GF and I are hooked. It's a damn fine show.

Watch Dexter!

WATCH IT NOW. It's the best TV Show ever.

Wow. Looking at peoples suggestions no one has suggested it.

More people need to watch it.

Six Feet Under
Oz

I'm working through Oz right now, and it's really good.
Six Feet under was also phenomenal.

Or my all time personal favorite:
The OC.
God I miss that show, words can't even express how I feel about it.

Leave it to Beaver.....yea it's ancient, but still funny and the standard joke:
what did Mrs. Cleaver say to Mr. Cleaver??... Ward, weren't you a little hard on
the beaver last night??.

Oz is pretty much amazing. I was even surprised by how graphic and inappropriate a lot of the stuff on there gets, almost like actually being in prison. :p

Nowhere Man (a conspiracy show). They only ever made one season though :(

I loved that show!

Same here!

I thought Bruce Greenwood did a great job and the storyline was pretty sweet. I mean, to get an entire society to deny your existence is pretty far out there.

Another one I miss as well was 7 Days with Jonathan LaPaglia. I guess UPN (now CW) had some good hits on their hands and not enough of the viewer share.

Burn Notice
Monk

Both are ongoing but you can pick up prior seasons on DVD. I don't have any others that haven't been mentioned already.
