I need a new suit

I'm getting married on the 24th. Instead of renting a tux, I've decided to buy a black suit that I can use for other things. I own only one suit and I use it maybe once or twice a year for formal parties, maybe a funeral. As some of my other friends start to get married as well I can see myself wearing one there as well.

Anyway, I know nothing about how much a good suit costs, what the differences are, why a suit would cost more money, etc. I've read a little about them and one thing is that fit is more important than everything else. Any other advice or where to go (I'm in Northern VA, not far from DC) would be appreciated.

FWIW, my first suit was around $350 or so. I'm prepared to pony up $500-$600 for this one.

I'm not concerned about getting it dirty or anything. My wedding is going to be a little more relaxed than most, but it's not going to be a kegger either. :)

I would be shocked if a woman didn't place a value on the suit that a man wore at their wedding.
IE: he bought a cheap suit, he thinks I am not worth it...

Cheap doesn't mean it has to look bad. I think cost-effective is a better thing to aim for...just make sure the fit is right. ie. Get the thing custom tailored wherever you buy it... Also, consider getting something that's classic rather than trendy. Depending on your age, you may want to consider renting if you think you're going to be gaining weight soon. Guys tend to gain about 5-10 on average between their early and late 20s due to metabolic changes. If you get married, that's almost guaranteed.

Delita, all those suits are 3x my budget.

Good link, olds. That'll help when I start having a conversation at the store.

I am sure you can find one that looks good and that one certainly does. But women, in general, are emotional/crazy when it comes to their weddings. Especially the younger ones.

Well it comes down to how a woman thinks. We have X dollars. I can spend 99% on me and 1% on the guy or some other way.

My wifes ring, 10k, my tux, $130. :)

Beatle,

I needed to buy a suit also - Macy's had a huge 1 day sale where most of their things are 70% off. Pretty snazzy to walk in and grab suits for $200-$300 that go for around $1,000. I had to grab seperates though because the CK one that fit perfectly in the jacket was too tight in the pants. I'm still happy with my Alfani and it looks nice.

My future wife doesn't really care so much about the suit as long as I'm pleased with it. What's a good shirt going to cost me? I'll need one of those, too.

I recommend going to a shop and seeing what they have. Tuxedo shirts can be found for $20-50 that are decent. Of course, depending on the buttons and how well it goes with your jacket (design and fit), you might want to buy them all at the same time/same place.

For $500 to $600, I'd suggest walking into Nordstroms, telling them what you want, and letting them help you out. My first suit was very cheap (for high school events). The two suits after that have been from Nordstroms and in your price range.

They helped me pick out what I want, measured me and altered the suits, came back for a fitting, then made the final adjustments. It was all very professional and I still wear both suits (about five times a year).

Brooks Brothers. Maybe the oldest American clothing company, but they still make classic suits (many presidents wore their suits, including JFK and Clinton). Their basic line starts around $600 but they have semi-annual sales from time to time.

How is that different from any other day of their lives?

Men's warehouse is probably the best place to go for a bargain

Brooks Brothers is a good idea...I've picked up a few really nice suits from Saks Off 5th and Neiman Marcus Last Call. Suits are usually 50% of their original sticker, plus I'm on their email list so I get various coupons. Look for a $400 suit, expect to pay $50-100 at a nice tailor, find a shirt for $50 and you'll have yourself a great overall combination. I already have all the shirts and shoes I could need, so now I'm just collecting nice suits as I see them. :p (Hugo Boss, Zegna, Report Collection, Ungaro Homme, Hickey Freeman, etc)
