I need a new sound card { HELP!!! }

Gee, there are basically two options: Game Theatre or Audigy.

I havn't heard the game theatre in action, but the audigy sounds ok. It sounds even better if you have a high-end dolby digital decoder you can plug into the digital out on the audigy.
 

I need one too... but I need one for digital audio recording and I don't have a slightest idea what is a good card or what features are the most important 🙁
 
I love my Acoustic Edge... Dosent seem to be nearly as popular now though...
 
I"ve been thinking about getting an GTXP as well, especially since it has coax in/out and toslink in/out. I think that it would handle what you'd be doing, mto81.

Now if only people would buy my stuff or offer a trade. doh.
 
All depends on how much you want to spend and what speaker setup you have.

I have the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz mainly for that extra versa jack that I so desperately need for my headphones, since my speakers have no headphone jack.
 
I have win xp. The Hercules Game Theater XP has no drivers for xp so I gess thats out.

Dus any one have win xp and a Hercules Game Theater XP? Dus it work?
 
I got the audigy gamer. Mp3's sound better than my old vortex2 card...didn't think that was possible. Add in the firewire port and the two games, for a bonus. Seems like a good deal.

If you get one, my advice would be to just install the drivers. I found the other software on the disc (and there is a lot of it) to be useless.

I recommend Audigy, but you can't go wrong with the Game Theater or Santa Cruz either. I would check up on any existing driver issues before buying. I had issues with Game Theater, WinXP, and Empire Earth.
 
Another vote for the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. I especially like the "versajack" out that can be various things selected in the GUI. Sounds good, no setup gremlins, no bugs or incompatabilities, and pretty reasonably priced. I think I got mine for $65 or so.

Yes, you can download new driver from Hercules' website. The latest is 4.1 and they work beautifully with XP.
 
Well, narrow it down by what you want it to do and how much you have to spend. Personally, I do some gaming and like 4-speaker surround for run-n-gun stuff like Quake, but like to easily switch over to headphones for stuff like Ghost Recon where you really need to use your ears. The GUI for the TBSC allows you to make this switch instantly. I don't do any A/V stuff with it, so didn't need RC outs or anything like that.

Right, but you have to plug in the 'phones every time you want to use them, right? I have my rig in a "computer desk" setup where the rig has its own little cubbyhole. It's a huge PITA to get to the back of the thing.....this way I just leave the headphones plugged in all the time and switch over via the GUI thingy whenever I want to use them (mutes the speakers at the same time).

That's why the GTXP has that breakout box with the headphone jack (and preamp) that can sit on your desk. I know it's not everybody's ideal solution, but it works for me.
