Knights of the Old Republic (PC/XBox), Morrowwind (PC/XBox), or Neverwinter Nights (PC).

most of the really good RPG's are on the PS2, though.

i just downloaded it a few days agocause i remembered how much fun it was when i played all the way thru it in 1993 or so. and i haven't thought a thing about the ultima series since i passed ultima 8.

I believe I played that game for a year and a half. At the time it was HUGE. The game had tons of side quests, tons of things to do and buy. The best scam I came up with was using Magic Mist to kill dragons in that dragon cave to the west of Trinsic, past the cave w/ the unicorn in it. Then take the gems off of the dragons and sell them at the jeweler in Britain.

I also played Ultima Online for 7 years.

I can't wait for the next Ultima.

EDIT: Out of curiosity, I just check out the current UO website, and they now actually SELL advanced characters, for $30. They come with maxed out stats and moderately high skills. The game had really started to slide when I quit, and this is just... ugh, I couldn't imagine being there now.

I assume you're talking about KOTOR? That's your fault for not saving more often.

In was near the end of the last planet and didn't figure I had to save. poop on me I guess I just wanted to kill the bitch.

KOTOR is notorious for all the bugs in the xbox version. There was a nasty one with Carth that would actually corrupt your save game.

KOTOR also bitchified top end PCs when it came out. It just wasn't coded very well for PCs. I didn't experience any crashes or bugs. I didn't appreciate having to use 1280x960 on my LCD though, and they never allowed 1280x1024 even after everyone complained.

Loads of fun the first time around.

I suggested it, but was never able to get into it myself. I keep meaning to pick it up again one of these days, but it was just way too non-linear for my tastes.

Speaking of older games...they aren't fully RPGs (technically, they're tagged as adventure games), but the Quest for Glories series is great. I personally enjoyed 1 and 4 the most, but 3 and 5 have their redeeming qualities as well.

Back on topic, another vote for Neverwinter Nights (if you plan on using the multiplayer aspects) and Baldur's Gate. Planescape: Torment (or was it Torrent...? I forget now) was also supposed to be great. I have it, but haven't yet actually gotten around to playing it.

Hmm, what else. KOTOR was a fun game, but because it was originally intended for the console, the PC version is a bit easy...at least interface-wise. It's fairly easy to tell that the controls and such were simplified so as to work with a joystick, but it's still pretty damn fun to slice up random creatures with your dual-wielded lightsabers.

Planescape:Torment =Probably the most underrated game of all time.

I second the votes for Morrowind & the Fallout expansions.

I tried Morrowind but I just couldn't get into it. Maybe I'll buy it again and give it another shot. This is after D3 and HL2 and Far Cry and CoD and MOHAA of course. I'm flush with games right now.

Yes, you're right. A bug in a console version of a game that causes the game to reboot is the players fault

Sacred- It's a Diablo II, NWN, Dungeon Seige clone, but it takes the best elements from each one of them.

the first one is called Hero's Quest (So you want to be a hero?). the 'Quest for Glory' thing came up later on in the series.

the first is my favorite, i actually played it in an XT-compatible PC, but i couldn't finish it up because of the last action scene (remember when you have to grab the chandelier and swing around to kick the bad guys?), well the cpu just wasn't powerful enough to load it to memory and play it back. argh i was so frustrated. finished it up finally on a friend's 286 :)
