I blew a my Antec 480 Ture Power PSU last night..strangely my floppy power plug somehow pulled free and the floppy was not working..so I plugged it back and replugged in the PSU power cord and pop and terrible smell

I unplugged the power cord and check the floppy connection and it seemed fine...replugged in again and pop, spark and bad smell and PSU is dead as a door nail

very strange no sure what happened...not sure if psu went bad...I can not imagine the floppy did this but just not sure
My setup:
480 antec true power..before death

Abit IT7 MAx 2 rev2
P42.4@2.9 at 160 fsb at 1.65v
2x512 kingston valuram pc2700 at 200 fsb at 2.7v
9700 pro
2x160 maxtor hdd
dvdrom
cdrw
dvdrw
floppy
audigy2
3 fans
adaptec 2906 scsi card

I am considering an ANtec 550 true power and enermax noisetaker p or ax series
http://www.maxpoint.com/

any thoughts? I want quiet power PSU...preferably at least 450w or better..want good solid unit

My antec was either 2 or 3yrs old...never an issue before last night 🙁

Sounds like maybe your floppy or floppy cable was the culprit.

Anyways,I give Antec high regards in the quality/reliability dept.,although Enermax is also good and would be my 2nd choice.
As far as what model, look at the specs and decide.Do you want quiet?Do you need lot's of amperage?
I went with the NeoPower 480W due to it's bottom mounted(push) 120mm fan, modular cable arrangment capabilities and it's performance spec's.Then again my system needs a bit more than your current set-up.
But if you plan on upgrading your current system in the near future,I'd suggest aiming for higher end then.
In any case the NeoPower is a good choice.
Off topic:I'm currently eyeballing the Silverstone Temjin SST TJ06 case, wich by design prefers a bottom mounted fan PSU to exploit it's excellent airflow capability and thus being able to direct airflow across the HD bay.I just read that in a review and it made me glad I chose the NeoPower.Nothing like another benefit to reassure my choices 🙂

thanks for the input..with the NeoPower..how many hdd/optical drives could you install?
is there separate molex for like radeon 9700pro

is it a quiet psu?

can you manually adjust the fan speed

BTW, what do you think happened...I had the computer off and replugged in the floppy..I did hit power button with psu unplugged from wall to discharge any left over power..then opened the case and replugged in the floppy..closed the case and plugged the psu back in...and all the crap happened ...very odd

I think Antec's have a 3 year warranty. You should try to RMA it. If you cannot do that, why don't you open it up? Is there some kind of fuse in there?

I thought I might try to rma but I can not find a receipt for the purchase..I know it is no older than like 2yrs 10 mo..I general build a new system around x-mas..last build was 2 yrs ago...then a year before that

thanks

NeoPower 480W - dual 12V rails (15A & 18A = 33A ttl) BTX,ATX V.2 ready.Fan only rail.120mm cooling fan(quiet)
Looks good. What more can be said 🙂

Give em a call......I am sure they will replace it.

I have, currently, three optical drives, four hard drives and a 6800GT running on my NeoPower 480W PSU... I intend to install a fourth optical drive (16x Plextor dvd burner) when it hits channels.

You have many molex lines to chose from... I had a 9800 Pro running off the same as some case fans without issue. I even have the 6800GT running off the same feed... Again, no issues.

is it a quiet psu?

It's not silent, but it's not as loud as many I've seen/had/used. It's hard to tell with the other fans I have at this time. When I install the new HSF I'll have a better idea... I do know that the fan on my video card is probably one of the loudest fans inside my system, so it's downing out telling how well other things are doing.

can you manually adjust the fan speed

It's quiet enough that you don't want to. With just one fan, I wouldn't screw around with it.

As for what happened to your old PSU... I can't exaclty say. I wouldn't use that floppy in another system, or on a new PSU since your PSU died when you connected it. With floppies as cheap as they are, it's safer to just get a new one, or get an external USB floppy for when you need it, if you even NEED one.

I'm no expert but from what I have read, I myself like to go with Enermax (though I know most people prefer Antec). Enermax has better ampage along the 12V rail (Usually about 6-8 more amps) than Antec. Because of that, my Enermax EG301P-VE is the probably the only thing holding my system together.

I am running the following with a 300W supply with Enermax:

2.54 P4
512 Kingston DDR
ATI AIW 8500
Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Platinum
WD 80GB
DVD Drive
Liteon CDRW Drive
2 - 3 USB powered devices
Floppy, Mouse, Keyboard...and the other standard yada, yada stuff

...2 years with no hitch, no random system reboots, power failures etc. Seems to be getting enough power. Might have to consider upgrading the PSU if I add anything else though.

Anyway I did a calculation a couple of weeks back. If I had used a Antec True 330 to do the job, there probably wouldn't be enough coming along the 12V rail. Again, I am a noob in PSUs, and don't know how accurate the calculation was, but I did it based on this: http://firingsquad.com/guides/power_supply/

I appreciate the excellent input from everyone

RMA: I will contact Antec and see what happens...I would even pay a bit for the rma

I have narrowed my choice to

1.Enermax Noisetaker P series 485W...looks nice..I like the idea of lower fan noise
2. NeoPower looks very nice...modular stuff is no ok..I figure I will end up using most if not all the connectors
3 OCZ 520w...only think that really bothers me is the lack of ATX V2.0 and PCI-E power connector...heft price at $150 shipped(only about $35 more than Antec NeoPower and Enermax Noisetaker)..also not sure if this will fit in my Antec 830 case

Yes I will not hook up this floppy again...I guess the floppy cable maybe the issue off the PSU as well....

I use the floppy to boot for bios updates for the mobo and fw stuff on my OD drives..though this may not be so important any more

I've not needed to boot from a floppy for bios updates in years. Every board I've used in either my own system, or one I've built, has had tools/utilities that allow you to update the bios from within windows. Same with my plextor dvd burner (the only other thing I've done firmware/bios updates on).

Cases should accept any standard size (physical) power supply. If it has an ATX PSU in it now, there's no reason it won't take one of the new ones. Especially with you having an Antec case.

I just got an Ultraproducts X-connect from Compusa. I was trying to reduce cable clutter for the most part. It works great. It makes less noise than the Enermax I had and looks much better since all the cables arent there.

Antec seems to be pretty lackluster these days. And have you seen their energy efficency test results? They're pathetic. I'd get the enermax.

Antec NeoPower is nice but the 12v rails stays in the mid 11's in most of the reviews I looked at...which is a concern...for the most part it stays below 12v...below 11.8v

the seasonic looks nice except the Amp levels are fair bit lower than the Enermax and Antec....only 25A on 12v
