IMO Miranda is best for a barebones client. If you don't mind memory usage and like the frills, you should go with Gaim.

Try the latest beta of gaim 2.0. I heard gaim 2.0 greatly improves gaim to aim transfers.

i understand that it doesn't necessarily support skins, but that it is possible to skin it in a way...

how? and where do i get skins?

Honestly, what does the newest AIM + DeadAIM NOT fulfill?

I still use Trillian. I like its logging capabilities (which I reference frequently), and I've had much better success with AIM file transfers and direct connections on Trillian than on gaim. And yes, I've tried recent versions of gaim. I've found that its file transfer capabilities to be inferior to Trillian's.

Again, AIM w/DA solves all those issues.

Now I see why people like Gaim... once you get past the ugly ass default interface, it's pretty good.

Couple troubles still though: How do I get it to make my away message window hide as well when i minimize to system tray, and how do I get it to not do tabs. (Why do people like tabs?!?)

any good sites out there for more GTK+ skins and gaim plugins?

i have 5.5.3599 (yes its NOT mistyped for 3505) w/ AIMutation. i would use deadaim, but i want to turn off those horrible annoying blinking IMs. and AIMutation is free.
