I need a new digital camera...help?

I haven't been into digital cameras since I got mine years ago. (2.0 megapixle kodak)
Well, it's broken now, so I'm in the market for a new one.
I do not have a lot of money. I am mostly using it for family type pictures, nothing super fancy. Vactions, etc. 200-300 dollar range. Any tips?

I have a Olympus S300 and like it, it's got an all aluminum body and is weather resistant. Good battery life, but I think Canon's have a slightly better picture as some might say.

May look into the Fuji cameras too. Too many models to sugest one to you but just look and see.

For the price, Canon A70 You can get it for around 170 right now. But hurry, not many places carry them anymore, they might have been discontinued, I'm not sure.

I'm suprised that the repost nazis haven't complained yet, because this question must get asked in this forum at least twice a week :)

Anyway, I'll agree that the A70 is a nice all-around choice. If you want to know more about the camera, read the review at
dpreview.com.

Actually the A75 is out now. Good camera for the money. -Review-
If you like small the Canon Powershot S series is good.
If you like really small, as in fits in an altoids tin. The Pentax Optio S4 or about to be released S4i are nice choices.

In addition to Dpreview I've been looking at Steves digicams and Megapixel.net

If you can go up to $320, a Canon PowerShot S400 from Amazon.com, search "digi" for the earlier threads where I and other discuss it. 4.0 MP goodness and the test shots at www.imaging-resource.com look very nice.

It apparently offers less manual control than the A70 / A80 though, so if you're not a camera n00b like me you might want the finer control from those models.

I just picked up the olympus stylus 400(4mp) for $235 after a $40 rebate. Its a smaller camera, but still takes very nice shots.

If you don't mind paying a little extra and you are considering the Poweshot S400 or SD100, they have been replaced by the S410 and SD110.
Dpreview shows all the latest Canon cameras here: www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/

Mind you the S400 or SD100 will be cheaper now because of this but it depends on wether you want the latest or looking to save some money. It sounds to me like you'd rather save the money. If you can get an A70 or SD100 for $200ish then jump on em.

Personally I'm waiting for the Pentax Optio S4i, but that's over $300.

the biggest problems with the A-70 (or the whole powershot series) is that they are slow. 1.6 seconds delay is quite a while if you are trying to catch motion.

I like the specs on the A-80 too (it was my first choice) but it's so damn slow.

the other big problem i have is that the video it records is in a quicktime format ( i realy hate quicktime, for various reasons i wont get into) but if you dont want to record videos too, then thats not an issue


my current top pick is the fuji f700 (i'll be buying something next week, and running in the $300-$400 range + $100 for 256MB card :)

Onecall.com has the new Pentax S4i for $360 with an extra battery. Not sure how much it is w/o the extra battery.

Is there any way i can use my compact flash card with the Fuji? it uses XD. I'd rather not buy more storage too

Nope. There are xD->CF adapters but CF cards are far too large to use in xD slots.

Edit: Don't listen to RossMAN, his Ferengi skills are waning. You can get the A210 for $134 shipped at Gateway.com.

1.6 second delay? On the A70 if you put it on "Continuous Shooting" mode you can get 2.2 images a second, and the burst should last around 5-8 pictures. It obviously isn't going to be as fast as, say, a Digital Rebel, but I've never had a problem with my G3 (which is rated at 2.5 a second on high speed continuous).

Is the video for the A70 different from the G3? The movies i record on my G3 are formatted as a WMP .Avi file.
