i have a nikon d50.
got the body, kit lens, carrying bag, and several other supplies for $600 off ebay going through Cameta Camera's auction. you can probably get it cheaper now.

I really like it but i don't get out to use it much and i'm stilllearning stuff about it. i should take a class or something, that would probably help me out more than reading about stuff or figuring it out on my own.

If you live near a Ritz Camera store, they offer free DSLR classes.

really? hmm..have to see if there is one close by

Canon 1Ds MKII for sure.

^^ LMAO!!

Canon XT w/24-105L FTW!

That's almost $2000. I don't think he's looking to spend that much. He should get the E-300 for $300 I linked above and this lens linked below. That would be about $700 for an 8 MP body and L quality glass with a 35mm range of 28-108mm.

you make it sound like he put in a budget!! 😛

Don't all SLRs have interchangeable lenses? That would defeat the purpose if they didn't right? I'd get a Nikon or Canon. Nikon D50 seems good for your uses since you didn't even know what an SLR was.......

Not all SLRs have interchangable lenses.

I would have a much better response if the OP gave 1) a budget, and 2) his requirements.

I mean, for a photo class, he shouldn't need much more than a 35mm or 50mm prime lens. He probably doesn't need a telephoto.

In that case, I would suggest a Canon Rebel XT for $658 from www.42photo.com and a Canon EF 50mm F1.4 USM lens for $319 from newegg (Total: $977).

Another option would be a Nikon D50 for $488 from www.42photo.com and a Nikon Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D for $280 at bhphoto.com (Total: $768). Note: I know nothing about Nikon lenses, so I have no idea how good that Nikkor 50mm really is.

Those would be my recommendations if he has to buy new.

First you need to offer how much you want to spend? YOu might only have the budget for a canon 300d or a 5d.

I'm telling you the pentax *ist - you'd be happy.

My brother has it, I can't afford one - but it is a nice cam. Read the reviews.
