I need a new digital camera for a class . . .

Hey all, I need a new digital camera for a class I'm taking.

It needs to have:

SLR (whatever that is)
Minimum of 5MP
And be capable of interchangeable lenses.

Thanks to all who reply!

As I always say, buying a camera body is the easy part. Buying the right glass for the task is the hard (and more important) part.

is there such a thing as a 5MP SLR ?

just get the cheapest digital SLR you can find... Canon and Nikon are good

Yeah there is. Even 2 MP dSLRs
Yeah, I almost picked up a Canon D30 (3.3 MP) for $300 a few months ago.

Well how serious are you about photography? Is it something you're passionate about? What class is this for? What career are you going for?

Yep. Used (eBay) is probably a good option for a student.

Basically I'm just taking a class because I'm interested in it mostly. Not sure if I want to do it for a career, but just checking it out.

But sorry, that's all the info about the required specs of the camera that I have at this time.

I would try to borrow one or something...hard to justify spending a lot if you aren't really into it.

SLR = Single-Lens Reflex, a type of camera that uses a movable mirror placed between the lens and the film or (CCD in a digital) to project the image seen through the lens to the viewfinder. In other words the viewfinder looks directly through the camera lens instead of a little window in the upper left corner of the camera body, so what you see is what you get. Last years Nikon or Pentax will do nicely for $500 or so.

i have a nikon d50.
got the body, kit lens, carrying bag, and several other supplies for $600 off ebay going through Cameta Camera's auction. you can probably get it cheaper now.

I really like it but i don't get out to use it much and i'm stilllearning stuff about it. i should take a class or something, that would probably help me out more than reading about stuff or figuring it out on my own.

If you live near a Ritz Camera store, they offer free DSLR classes.
