i dont like a big flat tabletop, because you tend to take up the surface area with tons of knick-knacks and cant take advantage of vertical/wall space

for that point, i dont like any premade desks systems... you have to conform to its design and idiosyncrasies

with the elfa, you mount vertical tracks on the which, off of which you can hang shelves in any configuration (width, depth) that you like

that picture is not of mine because i am not home. however, you can understand the modularity and flexibility.
an even better solution for the computer is i have a 30" depth shelves i use as the "workspace". then, a few inches above the main workspace, i mounted shallow 6" shelves, upon which my LCDs sit. that keeps the monitor and keyboard at proper ergonomic levels. also, i can slide the keyboard all the way up against the wall (instead of against the monitor), to save a bunch of open space for "desktop" working/studying

elfta is WAY, WAY OVERPRICED. I have some elfa units, they are sturdy as fuck. Gotta find an employee though, emp. discount (was) 50% off ELFA.

i like to use short file cabnets and a solid core wood door. cheap and very sturdy. add a peice of formica to the top to dress it up a little.

This is what I have for a desk right now, too. Massive amount of surface space and not going anywhere.

Lian Li had some IIRC that went along with their enclosures. Pretty slick desks (Anandtech or Tomshardware had a review of them I believe).

you mean this?

yea its cool but it costs a small fortune

Yup thats it

Pale Rider why do you say they are over rated?

Do you own or have you worked with their products? People on AT and many hardware forums love to hype them up as the best products in the world. Having worked with several models I can tell you they are indeed not that great. Even Anand wrote in his blog how disappointed he was with his Lian Li HTPC case and noted it's shoddy materials and poor build quality.

Like I said, this is for a different thread though.

ELFA looks awfully cluttered to me. It almost looks like the shelves are too close to the desk...I'd feel like everything was going to fall on me if I had a setup like that. Maybe the pictures don't do it justice... I'm 100 miles from atlanta though. I might just drive down to check out IKEA and the Container store...I've never been to either.

that picture is just for example. of course you dont have to - and should not - set it up that way. ie, dont use a single shelving across the length of the wall - stagger them or mix up the depth, etc.

i have a deeper work surface than in the photo, with progressively shallower shelving as i move up the wall, so it does not feel claustrophobic or as if im sitting UNDERNEATH shelving

it IS very very overpriced. i bought it on sale where the shelves were 50% off, and i had a small wall space, so i made out okay
