I bought a workstation desk from Office Depot in 2001.

It's still in great shape, but my wife isn't a big fan of it because it's not a good study desk. (which is what she needs)

Pic of Current Desk (please excuse my clutter)

I'm looking for a multi-function corner desk that is going to be sturdy and last few a good 10+ years. I don't want one of the frosted glass numbers you see or the ones with cheap metal poles for the structure... I'm almost tempted to move my computer to a table temporarily, sell my current desk and try to build a desk the width of the room. :D

Does anyone have any recommendations of what's popular and good quality? Thanks,

-Scar

That's kind of what we're looking at. I think my wife isn't a fan of my clutter and wants to force all my software titles to a box rather than shelf. I just want to get something that's gonig to be useful for her.

Check out IKEA. They have a huge selection and you can even design your own set-up (table top and legs).

An Ikea Gallant corner/L-shaped desk looks to be the perfect match. I don't trust their legs anymore though; it never failed, but I got a look at the height-adjustment mechanism. I'm using a flat top too, but I'll probably downsize once I can afford some tower speakers.

I recently moved from a nice long desk to an l-shaped desk with my previous desk in the corner. Much, much better setup than before. I call it my own command center. Plenty of free space, has a nice hutch and the surround sound is awesome. the other desk is used for troubleshooting/building purposes. All in all, has made me started playing more games on the computer

I have an L-shaped corner IKEA Galant desk, but it does kind of wobble a bit. I really wanted a corner desk though, and I didn't see anything more functional than the Galant at any of the other stores I looked at.

IKEA Jerker.

Seriously, its called that. But get one, the desktop is huge and very deep. I keep my monitor, keyboard, and mouse on it and still have room to study.

define multi-function... I stole my current desk from my office at work, but it's basically just an L shaped top + legs from Ikea. it's sturdy... I've seen identical desks at work stacked with well over 200 pounds of servers.

i like to use short file cabnets and a solid core wood door. cheap and very sturdy. add a peice of formica to the top to dress it up a little.

Unfortunately they don't make that desk anymore. You'd have to find one on Ebay or Craigslist or something.

Multi-Function = Study desk + Less Cluttered Computer Desk

I curently have the CRT, but am wanting to move up to 2 or 3 LCDs like I have at work. Even though I wouldn't use more than one for gaming, it'd be nice to do dual monitors just cause I'm used to it.

I've never bought anything from IKEA, but like the looks of the IKEA Galant.

I had a desk that was too small for studying too.
I went to Home Depot and bought a piece of MDF that was covered in laminate. I cut it to the size I wanted and attached it to the desktop. Bigger desk for $20 or $30 or so.

Lian Li had some IIRC that went along with their enclosures. Pretty slick desks (Anandtech or Tomshardware had a review of them I believe).

I prefer L-Shape desks because you get a dedicated workstation area and dedicated study area. You are limited by where you can place the desk in the room though.

Here is a shot of my old desk. I had to leave it the last time I moved. I paid $1,500 for it in 2004. It included a matching lateral filing cabinet.

im a fan of the Container Store Elfa shelving system

i dont like a big flat tabletop, because you tend to take up the surface area with tons of knick-knacks and cant take advantage of vertical/wall space

for that point, i dont like any premade desks systems... you have to conform to its design and idiosyncrasies

with the elfa, you mount vertical tracks on the which, off of which you can hang shelves in any configuration (width, depth) that you like

that picture is not of mine because i am not home. however, you can understand the modularity and flexibility.
an even better solution for the computer is i have a 30" depth shelves i use as the "workspace". then, a few inches above the main workspace, i mounted shallow 6" shelves, upon which my LCDs sit. that keeps the monitor and keyboard at proper ergonomic levels. also, i can slide the keyboard all the way up against the wall (instead of against the monitor), to save a bunch of open space for "desktop" working/studying

Lian Li products are over rated anyway. I've been saying this for years. But that's for another thread.
