Every time I take a long road trip, I buy a new CD. That kind of becomes the theme of the trip.

I'm looking for a new CD for my Feb move back home. I'm looking for something with some soul. Something catchy, maybe funky.

Any suggestions? No hardcore rap or country. Thanks.

Kanye West - The College Dropout

Will be in stores early Feb. Don't know when you're moving though.

Try either of Jay-Z's (Blueprint, Blueprint 2, Black Album) or Nas' (Stillmatic, G-d's Son) latest CDs. Not exactly hardcore rap... Jay-Z is more hip-hop and Nas is more about his message than anything else. If you haven't heard Stillmatic and you like rap AT ALL, go get it NOW.

Check out the iTunes store...
Any suggestions?

I was just suggesting that because they have all kinds of celeb playlist and you can preview every song they have.

Lots of exclusive stuff too. People can dog Apple and the iPod all they want. The iTunes store is one sweet setup however.

If it's rap after The Fat Boys, I don't know anything about it.

Doesn't matter. Stillmatic is one of the best CDs of *any* genre, period.

These are "soulful" singer-songwriter folk & rock, but no Smokey.

Grant-Lee Phillips - Moblize
Carrie Akre - Home, Invitation
Teddy Thompson - Teddy Thompson (son of Richard & Linda)

not so new, but you might have missed:

Morphine - Yes, Cure for Pain
Grant Lee Buffalo - Mighty Joe Moon

Well, I'm going down there to go to college. Might be a bad omen. ;)

I kid, I kid. Here are some CDs I was thinking of getting:

James Brown - 20 All-Time Greatest Hits
Motown-The Classic Years
Temptations-Ultimate Collection
Stevie Wonder - The Definitive Collection
Marvin Gaye-The Very Best of Marvin Gaye

Can't knock those choices... That's some good stuff.

What about that new double album by Outkast? That seems pretty catchy.

Personally I would pick something like Seventh Son of a Seventh Son by Iron Maiden. You can never go wrong with Maiden.

I don't know about Outkast. When it comes to most things, assume I'm about 50 years old.

The best Motown collection I've come across.

If you like rap (but not the hardcore stuff), try The Roots and Jurassic 5. Upbeat, very catchy.

Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back

Never heard it myself, but really really want it, it's supposed to be a rap classic, and one of the best albums ever made.

Whoaaaaa. That looks sweet. It's a bit expensive for me right now though.

I'm putting it on my list for sure.

According to many the greatest metal album ever- Metallica's Master of Puppets. From back when they weren't about making #1 hits.
