I'm taking a stab at building a PVR/DVR using a small form factor system, so a low-profile video card is a must. I have a spare 128MB Radeon 9200 installed at the moment but the picture quality is a little lacking. From some reading I understand that for ATI cards, models with the "Rage Theatre" chip are desired re: tv out picture quality. What about nVidia?

Edit: I don't mind buying used (eBay)

ATi cards of that vintage are well-known to have poor picture quality on video playback. MaxPC detailed it in their Nov 05 issue, and this site goes into rather extensive comparison.

However, it looks like you're stuck. I don't think there are any 6000 series low-profile cards out there. The best I could find was an FX5200, which plays back DVD just fine (I have one in my MCE machine), but it doesn't support PureVideo.

Ah, PureVideo, thanks for that. I did a quick search and it looks like a few companies did produce low-profile 6200 series cards. So, that could be an option for me. I also found a spare X1550 and will give it a try tonight. If it doesn't work out either then i'll start looking for a 6200.

The X1550 shouldn't be any more acceptable. Note the comparison site referenced above uses an X1800.

You simply don't have many options for AGP, perhaps you should start looking around eBay.

I check out the comparison tonight. I've poked around eBay a bit and saw a few 6200 cards.
