I need a longer zoom lens

Went out hiking this afternoon, both to enjoy the nice weather (finally!) and for a chance to play with my new camera. Nothing much happened until I stumbled across this. Sorry about the lousy shot (that's a 100% crop), but the 18-55 kit lens doesn't have much reach, and the turkey was walking away from me the whole time. Might go back tommorow and see if I can get anything better. A longer lens might help :)

Unless you plan to do nature photography why do you need a zoom lens? Just get closer to your subject.

Iused to use a 300mm lens with my 35mm SLR, sometimes with a 2x adapter. Worked ok for outdoors stuff, though sometimes a good telescope with a camara adapter is a better choice for taking pics of spooky animals.

well, I was trying to be practical. Not to mention that I was just walking today - no tripod or anything with me.

About that one, I read that only a few have been made and the price is "well into 5 figures".

Well, taking a walk in the woods with your camera and actually making a living doing nature photography are two completely different things. Did I miss something or does the OP actually make his living at nature photography?

I'm reasonably sure that no self respecting nature photographer would randomly post on a computer forum asking for someone to buy him a zoom lens though.

Well, taking a walk in the woods with your camera and actually making a living doing nature photography are two completely different things. Did I miss something or does the OP actually make his living at nature photography?

WTF does "make a living at nature photography" have to do with that?

Last time I checked a deer, or a turkey, or a bird doesn't discriminate between amateur and professional photographers. Some people do enjoy, as a hobby, walking around and taking pictures of nature. Wanting a zoom lens sort of helps you get closer to things without spooking them off. Are you simply ranting because he posted here and not on something like Fred Miranda?

I never said anything about making a living doing this. No need to get testy. Why would I have to be a pro to do nature photography anyway? I already like to fish and hike, so why not? Sure, it may not appear in National Geographic, but who cares? All I was trying to do was show a picture; the chip-in bit was just trying to be humorous.
