I need a laptop that can run 1920x1200 and be silent as the grave.

Basically what the title says. I'm going on exchange and it's impractical for me to transport my desktop computer halfway through Europe. But I need pixel space and quiet fans for my concentration, and my current laptop can't even run 1366x768 without whirring loudly every 15 minutes.

I need a notebook that will run word processor, browser, background applications like Skype etc. at 1920x1200, more or less without leaving the lowest fan speed level.

Does that exist?

Screen size doesn't matter, maybe unless we're talking +20".

I know of probably one or two professional class (Read: Very Expensive) laptops that would even pack a 1900 x 1200 display. As for the fan noise, clean the vents out once in awhile.

For what it's worth, the Apple laptops run very, very quiet unless you're doing something very intensive (which it doesn't sound like you are). I have one of theirs from 2009, and 95% of the time, the only thing I hear is the hard drive spinning. I never hear the system fan rev up unless I'm crunching video with Handbrake.

Their high-res models are 2560-by-1600 on the 13", and 2880-by-1800 on the 15".

That res isn't exposed to the user unless you are in Windows though. You can get utilities that will let you use them in OS X, but they aren't available by default. The 13" has effective resolutions of 1280*800, 1440*900 and 1680*1050. The 15" has effective resolutions of 1440*900, 1680*1050 and 1920*1200.

he Ativ Book 9 Plus offers a 13.3-inch 3200 x 1800 qHD+ multi-touch display and is powered by Intel's Core i5 and i7 ULT Haswell processors (depending on the model), which offer a full 12 hours of battery life. It also supports up to 8GB of RAM, Intel HD Graphics 4400, a 256GB SSD, and is 13.6mm at its thickest point. That makes it thinner than Apple's MacBook Air, although we didn't think it looked significantly thinner in person. Weighing just 1.39kg,

Laptop with that kind of resolution are usually in the desktop replacement class.
They are build with power users in mind, it is not going to be quiet..

Ah, didn't realize that. Have done a little reading, but no serious shopping as my current laptop is doing what I need.

Sounds like the 15" would give the OP the effective resolution he's looking for, then.

It's a small utility, but the OS is really designed to be used at those effective resolutions. At full res, everything is 1:1, so tiny. Whereas with the other resolutions, there is scaling going on.

The think pad helix would (somewhat) fit your requirements

It has a 11.6" 1080p screen, a tablet/hybrid

The keyboard base has 2 fans, but the tablet portion disconnects and runs with passive cooling (no fans, cpu throttled)

Shouldn't be too hard to disable the fans when docked in the keyboard

Problems: price - starts at 1300, some people complain fans run loudly/tablet runs too hot, but latest software/firmware updates solve some complaints, ssd is not really user replaceable (there are service manuals available to look through)

Plus/meh: optional 8gb ram configuration (soldered, so can't be replaced, but I see few laptops in that category (ultra book, 1080p, Tablet hybrid) 8gb available at all

I'd say the 15" retina macbook pro is probably your best bet for a 16:10 screen that is big enough for that resolution to be practical. It is pricey though... 16:10 is a rarity these days nobody on the windows side of things really make laptops with that aspect ratio anymore (sadly).

hp elitebook... would be my recommendation.
If ur not doing anything cpu heavy.. the fan doesnt whirl.. ive been using elitebooks at my work for a while now,
and dont think i can go back to dell or any other vendor for business class laptops.

Hey OP... 1920x1200 was sort of phased out to 1920x1080.
Is that 120 pixil that important? just those 120pixils on a laptop can cost you almost double.

If you could accept 1920 x 1080, I have a Dell work laptop that I never hear the fan running.

I agree with this. I am running a precision m4600 at work, has a i7 and with ssd I can't hear it at all while surfing the net or running office type apps. Pretty impressive since this is the 15" precision instead of the 17".
