So I have an extended vacation from work. I need something to occupy my time. I was thinking RC helicopters would be fun.

Does anyone have any experience with them?

Other reco's for a creative hobby?

they are pretty involved. hit up some rc forums and research. they are very hard to fly and if you crash its very easy to completely wreck. then you'd have to do a whole lot of buying and repairing. try a sim first, like realflight.

I have a micro electric RC heli with 6-channel radio. It looks fun but it's really hard to learn. I tried taking off and hover a few times and I just couldn't get it. Kind of gave up now. With a micro size you won't worry about destroying anything, but you will crash and you better have replacement blades.

Nothing like getting "whacked off".

its no laughing matter, the blade tips move at upwards of 250mph. they are capable of quite a big of destruction.

I'd start out with something like this.

I have this helicopter but it's kind of difficult to fly IMO. I wrecked a couple blades already and even bent the main shaft once because I took it up higher than I should have and lost control of it.

Same here. Make sure to buy spare blades in advance, else you'll be waiting for a week or 2 for them to arrive when they break.

Make sure you fly in an open and empty area on a calm day. The blades, even on a smaller heli can slice/cut into wood.

rc choppers are not as fun to build as planes; way too easy

if you can get your hands on any (I mean ANY), or the old Byron plane kits... those are fun to build

also, does anyone have a Kyosho Vanning for sale?

I fly RC planes. I would recommend a good simulator first.

The one from RealFlight is excellent, comes with a transmitter for the controler, and helicopters are included in the simulator.

Here's a good place to purchase, Tower Hobbies.

Or, get the simulator and a co-axial copter together, here.

Good luck!
