I will never buy a Maxtor drive again (2 have failed on me)

I am looking at a 40gb retail drive and I have narrowed it down to either a Seagate 7200 RPM or Western Digital 7200 RPM drive.

Which would you pick and why? I have heard that Seagate makes good drives....

Well if you can wait i think WD is coming out with smaller HDs with 8mb of cache. If you cant wait either spend the extra money and get a 80GB WD 8mb cache hd (i think its $115 at newegg). if not get the seagate.

Just one question: what's the benefit of buying a 40GB HDD? It's really not much cheaper than 80GB drives. Anyway...Both seagate & WD make good drives, and so does maxtor as a matter of fact. The seagate drive is probably a little more silent, but I'd personally get a WD800JB.

Take the bus instead of the car for 2 weeks and save 20 bucks on gas... use that 20 to buy yourself a bigger HD. Or find some other way to get that extra $20... (less coffee from Starbucks perhaps ;))

There isn't much price difference between a 30gb, 40gb, 60gb and 80gb hard drive. From my experience both drives are excellent choices. Now if its the 8MB cache your after then Western Digital should be fine. If its less noise then the Seagate is a winner. Both are about as fast (one is faster at something that the other isn't... they basically tie when it all comes down to it) and both will suite you fine.

I personally recommend Seagate to you, having had nothing but success with that brand both personally and at work.

I would go with Seagate for sure, I don't like Western Digitals very well. Why did the Maxtors fail? Seems like most people run them too hot or something and don't realize it.

All else being equal (In other words size, RPM, cache, etc), I would choose the one that you can get the better price on. If the choice is between a 2/4MB cache X and an 8MB cache Y, I would choose the Y even if it is a bit more.

They are both good brands and I haven't seen either be more reliable than the other, performance between the brands varies between model and model -- you haven't provided models for us to compare. Check over at StorageReview if you want to see the performance of different hard drives.

If you are really picky about noise, the Seagate's Baracuda's are quieter than the WD Caviar's from what I've seen. If you care about top transfer rate, the WD are generally a little faster.

Out of all the current model HDs, the Maxtors run the hottest (fastest access times too). That would be my guess too. They run about 1C hotter than the Baracuda/WD2000JB/IBM120GXP and 3.5C warmer than the WD 1200JB (previous generation for reference). I am not sure whether the 1C is enough to make a difference, but the 3.5 maybe.

Even between drives running at the same temp, some are more sensitive to temp than others. It seems the whole IBM 75/60GXP thing was quite a bit due to temperature.

Get Seagate. I got a 60 gig 5400 RPM WD and it runs hotter than my Seagate 80 gig 7200 RPM Barr IV. Plus, it whines like a spoiled brat. I guess I do spoil it, since it is by itself (put anything near it and it'll toast the other drive too) and it has it's own hdd fan. It is the loudest thing in my comp; I unplug it, and my comp is silent. So yeah, kill damn WD, hate hate hate.

Just curious (like I always am) ... but what happened to ur 2 other Maxtor drives ?

If U ask me I am big time Maxtor fan ... but if U want an opinion between Seagate and WD ... I would recommend the 8MB Western Digitals...I have a few buddies that have em and they love those drives.

Hope this helped

I've had nothing but perfection from Maxtor. IBM and WD have both been less than wonderful for me. I just encouraged my little brother to grab an 80gb seagate for $100 after rebate from best buy, since his 20gb WD just died a gruesome death and took most of his data with it :)
