If you are sure the thermal grease is still in good shape you can leave it. If it's been under a year or so you should be fine.

What is the hardest part...?

For me it is installing the OS. The hardware part is usually a piece of cake as long as you've done your homwork and are careful about static.

With socket A, theres no IHS (integrated HeatSink), so the hardest part about hardware would be putting on the TIM (Thermal Interface Material). The CPU and HSF are still attached, without a motherboard? lol... it would be best to clean off the old TIM and apply a new layer of AS5. Check out the Arctic Silver website for info on how to clean off both your HSF and CPU, as well as intructions on how to apply a new layer of AS5. You can sustitute their AS Cleaner with 90% Isopropyl Alcohol instead.

The fan is fastened to the heatsink and the heatsink is attached to the motherboard. To change motherboards means detaching the heatsink from the dead motherboard.
