I usually convert them to .wav using Winamp (takes 5 seconds on my puter), then load Cooledit 2000, a very good audio editing program, and edit excactly what i want (you can zoom in for maximum precision on the edit).
Cool Edit 2000 here as well. I use that for my own profesional editing purposes. Sometimes I am embarrassed to say it just because of the name "Cool Edit." Oh well, it is powerful software.
I use Goldwave (http://www.goldwave.com) It's very similar to Cooledit, but the latest version (4.0) will edit MP3's directly if you have Media Player 6.4 or above installed... very cool...
