I Need A Good Modem Bad!!!!

I need only one more component to complete my system, and this is a PCI modem. My general needs are something that is relatively inexpensive that will work well on my bad phone lines. I don't need any of that fancy voice mail fax stuff. I am going to get a cable modem whenever it is available in my area which could be soon (probably not lazy COMCAST!!) so I son't want to fork over the mula on something really good.

A couple general modem questions:

will using a k56 flex modem help the bad phone line situation out?
are v.90 and v.92 modems better for adapting to bad phone lines anyway?
will getting a win modem drop the performance so much I would not want to buy one?

Here are two modems that I have been looking at:

USR
Pheobe

Which one is better? Do they both suck?

Well I really hope you guys can help me out on this one. Any info at all I would much appreciate as well as any good sites and especially specific modem suggestions.

Please help this poor idiot out!

Here's an idea. You might give the Intel HaM Data/Fax/Voice PCI Hardware modem a look see.

I came across this one day while I was looking at a list of authorized Paypal merchants. I found the modem at pcafterhours.com for $10.99 +10.00 shiping, for a total of $20.99.

I live in a small town, in a 101 year old house. Suffice it to say, the phone wiring is antiquated. I've tried and/or owned several modems (Diamond Supras, Zoom, etc.) and this is the best by far. The most stable and fastest connection ever.

The modem is manufactured by Ambient Technologies, an Intel company.

BTW, I don't work for pcafterhours.com, Ambient Technoloigies or Intel. I'm just a small cog on the low bandwidth wheel in rural Oregon😀

Offhand, I'd go with the USR internal, as I'm a USR fan. However, the general consensus is that external hardware modems are the fastest and most reliable. There are some incredibly inexpensive deals on eb*y for well-regarded modems like the Diamond SupraExpress external and the USR Faxmodem pro and Courier V. Everything (I got my Courier for around $100 from a seller).

Another option: CompGeeks has got this pretty slick Elsa MicroLink 56KFlex V.90 Pocket-Sized External Modem w/SW on sale for $29.95. It seems to be a full hardware modem (it is, per review). Comp Geeks:

Bozo Galora,

Yep, that's the one. They charge $10 shipping, so it comes up to $20.99.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions guys, this is really helping me out.

Both the modems sound great.

A couple of questions... why do external modems perform better than internal? Also you mentioned that the Microlink has k56 flex and just like my question above will this help it perform better on my bad phone lines than the competition?

Thanks again.

Usually hardware modems work best with poor phone lines.
External modems work best because they're usually hardware modems.
(Avoid USB external modems).....

Where's Modus. Oh well, I'll tell you what he'd tell you. Get a modem based on the Lucent Chipset. You can get them at pricewatch for 10-15 dollars. They're not fully hardware, but they are a lot better than winmodems.
