Just say you need to go for a checkup at the doctor's and you missed the last one.

If you somehow get busted on it and he calls you a moran, proceed to telling him that you're only uman and you made a mistake. He'll understand. If he doesn't, cheer him up with a lolcat. Then post :camera:'s of [insert relevant female] (in this case your sister) and tell us the details of how you got fired after becoming a corporate whistleblower.

END THREAD.

yeah man that took quite a few hours, although that might backfire since you won't be able to drive.

I have a doctor's appointment on Wednesday afternoon, smack in the middle of my work day that's an hour drive away... I need to come up with a good lie to tell my boss to explain why I have to take a half-day. any suggestions?

I can't do the obvious and just tell the truth, because then I'd have to explain why I'm going to a specialist an hour drive away and even though it's really nothing, if I tell my boss, he'll tell his wife (aka: my sister), who will tell my mom, who'd end up freaking out and being worried over nothing. and frankly, I just don't feel like discussing it (but if I said that, my mom would likewise freak out wondering what I'm hiding).

the alternative is to just take a sick day and take the whole day off, but it seems like such a waste for a 2 pm doctor's appointment if I can just come up with an excuse to take a half-day.

I now understand you in a way I wish I didn't.

Your sister is your boss' wife, and if you lie you don't think it'll get back to you? Seriously, he'll tell her either way you were gone for half a day, she'll tell your mom, they'll hound you, it'll come out that it was all a lie.

Tell the truth, and tell him you'd rather he not mention it for the exact reason you just gave us, and when/if he does then you can bitch up and down about him doing what you asked not to and that he caused your mom unnecessary grief.

I like the eye dialation idea, might say that I promised to give a friend a ride back/forth to her eye doctor in Princeton.

Tell him you need to take half a day off to "do some gay stuff." If he questions that, file a discrimination complaint with HR.

Seriously though, tell him you have a doctor's appointment. If he asks further questions, you can obfuscate and say it's just a general check-up or whatever, but it's not his business. You can't be a doctor's appointment as an excuse unless someone in the family dies, but seeing as how he's your brother in law, he'd probably know if you were lying about that.

I'd just take the day off. Sleep in, wake up, get some breakfast, lunch, whatever. Go get your appt. done and then come home and relax. I see no cons.

Your brother in law needs to play the roll of your boss at this point and respect your privacy as an employee of the company. You are obligated to tell him that you have a doctor's appointment; you don't have to explain anything else to him. Actually, if you are just taking some payed time off then you shouldn't even have to tell him its a doctor's appointment; you should really just have to tell him you are taking some time off, its just respectful on your behalf to let him know the details. He doesn't need to know where you are going, what kind of doctor it is, or anything like that. Just let him know what time you'll be back.

This shouldn't be an issue, brother in law for a boss or not.
