Just ran the wiring last week to plug XM box into HTPC. Ran wiring today to control HVAC via HA/HTPC. Running wiring next weekend to do the same with irrigation system. Wife happy cuz 1)i'm happy so she&a friend went shopping tonight, and 2)she thinks i'm almost done cuz there's no more unopened/half-finished projects around. (almost).
How am I going to explain to her that I want to rip out our ADT security system, replace it with an automation panel/security system that integrates with the HT/HAPC setup, so that:
- when we walk out of house, we punch in a code on the wallmount touchscreen, it turns down heat/turns off all lights/radio/TV/speakers/etc., and arms security system.
- when we get 5 mins away from home, send an SMS message via cellphone to house to turn up heat, turn on driveway light.
- when it detects a car in the driveway and our RFID tag on the keychain in the driveway, it turns on exterior & entry lights, unlocks door when we get 2' from it.
Did I mention we're solidly middle-class, and don't actually have anything much in the house worth stealing? I'm just doing this because it's vastly interesting, and i'm a PM so I'm not allowed to be technical at work anymore, and I feel like I need this as an outlet. The whole thing is probably only $1000-$1500, but still...
