As the title says which burner is the best value for under US$85? What would you suggest? The thing is my friend is going for a trip to Singapore. So I asked him to pick up one from there because stuff is apparently cheaper over there. I need to know what brand and also what speed shall I get in my budget?

Also anyone know any places in Singapore from where to pick up genuine stuff? I hear you get a lot of fake stuff over there (are my fears well founded?)...

Lite-on

You can get 'em from Newegg for your price range...so maybe they're even cheaper in Singapore?

I'd say if he can actually find 'em cheap you should spring for a nice Plextor though...

If buying in the US, definitely go lite-on

Another vote for Lite-on. They rule! I bought a 24x Lite-on from Newegg for $80 a couple months ago, and it has not failed me once (I've burned well over 100 CDs by now, not one coaster). The audio extraction speed is 24x, which is quite good (I can rip a CD at 192kbps in under 3 minutes).

By now you might be able to get a 32x Lite-on for $80, although I'd guess it's still higher than that (might get lucky in Singapore though, who knows).

Plextor is good too but omg they're expen$ive :'(

Another vote for LiteOn. I've owned LiteOn and Plextor CDRWs, and I must say that I think I like the LiteOns even more than the Plextors. The main diff is that the tray mechanism on the LiteOn drives operate like doors on a Mercedes, while the Plextor trays are more like Hyundais... 🙂

newegg has a cyberdrive 16x10x40 cdrw retail boxed going for $55, my friend bought one from computer show, it work as good as my tdk. There's not much difference between 40x-16x cd-r burners, use the extra $$$ on cd-r's.😀
