I've been looking at the Philips 202P45 and the Samsung 1100DF.

Any other recommendations?

Reviews would be a plus.

Sony CPG-G520. Trinitron tube, so you do get the two aperture grill lines, but if you can stand that, there is not much bad to say about this monitor.

I would recommend against the Sony. Not that its a bad monitor (I own a G520p), but I have seen better for a similiar price. I also have a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2040u and I think its abit better then the Sony. Its not a huge difference, but somewhat better. If I was buying a new CRT now I would get a Mitsubishi 2070u. After getting my first LCD though I will never get a CRT again.

I have this monitor and can't say anything bad about it. It's a great product. Peace.

It's ashame sony has dropped it's crt line of products...they were certainly great products. Especially the GDM series featured unbelivable text and geometery. Probably the best quality new CRT monitors you can get are made by iiyama. Viewsonic's are just to blurry at high res. Anyhow, good luck on finding a sony if they are still around, i would suggest looking at Ebay.

Sony still makes the GDM line, the GDM-C520k is the latest IIRC.
I'd get the Samsung 1100DF
I have two IBM P275(same as Sony G520), and the convergence is horrible. The lines are blurry when I turn up the contrast. I've gone through 6 of these monitors, and all of them has the same problems.

Thanks guys. We have one Diamond Pro here in the office and it has been great. It was quite expensive when we purchased it, though.

Dell has the Diamond Pro's for ~$700.

My HP p1120, which is pretty much the same as the Dell/HP p1110(I've no idea why HP has both the p1110 and p1120 though) is great running at 1600x1200@85Hz too.

The only thing that I don't like about it, other than the little dent on the bottom left corner of mine(2nd hand unit), is that the tube isn't nearly as black as the old Nokia 445XPro that it replaced, and so contrast isn't as good as it could be.

I would get anything with a trinitron type tube. They have brighter colors and more contrast vs shadow mask tubes.

LCDs still have not won me over for gaming.

I love LCDs for general computing. They do not display proper grey scales and they have the ole native mode which crt does not. I know they are getting faster and faster to get rid of ghosting but they still don't beat CRTs for games. Off axis viewing is poor too.

I'm looking too.

I have a Dell 1800FP now and I'm starting to play more games and notice the "ghosting" effect.

I'm really picky about flicker and that's why I went to LCD in the first place, so whatever I get needs to do 85Hz at 1600x1200 (since that's what I plan on running on a 21/22").

I think the Diamondtron based monitors look good.
The NEC-Mitsubishi FE2111SB looks really nice, the Viewsonic P225F looks tempting too.

Careful with the Mitsu2070. Apparently the text quality at 1600*1200, 85hz is a tad blurry. The image quality is supposed to be outstanding though. Which 21" CRTs have excellent text quality? Anyone have an NEC 2111SB?

I've got a nec fe2111sb and it's pretty good. Only flaw is that the image slowly drifts a few millimeters during the first half hour it's on but you have to be looking for this to really notice it. Games look great and the Super Bright feature is really handy. However I think that if I had to buy it again I'd just go with the 2141/2070 (I think those were the names, top NEC/Mitsu models anyhow). Once you spend $900 Can. (what I paid last summer) I figure you might as well throw in an extra $100 and get the best.

Looks like for the best text, go with a shadow mask monitor.
I'm going to get the Samsung 1100DF.

Sounds like aperture grill monitors (like those based on the Mitsubishi Diamondtron NF & Superbright tubes), have richer colors, but blurrier text.

Whichever you go with, I would definitely recommend actually looking at the one you plan to buy. I recently purchased a Viewsonic P95f+, and the first one that I took home without taking it out of the box had sever convergence problems and shadowing. I returned it and made the store open a second one that ended up being much, much, better. Still not LCD quality with clarity, but very nice overall.

While at the store, I was looking at all the CRT's, and none of them were as good as my older IIyama Vision Master Pro 17 (even my new monitor isn't quite as clear as the old one in the corners, but I can't run 1600x1200 on my 17" because everything is too small).

I think that CRT manufacturers have really let the Quality Control slide, since they figure that high end people are typically going for LCD's instead of CRT's, and because they have to sell for considerable less than LCD's, even though they will eventually cost much more to manufacture.

Maybe the story is different with the 20" and higher monitors, since they are still used primarily by Industry and Professionals, but with 17" and 19" I would definitely hesitate ordering online, especially if you need to pay shipping to return it.

-D'oh!

yeah, I noticed that mine seemed a bit on the bright side too...however, if you play with the color profile in the control panel (ATI color tab in my case), you can usually get it looking good. Changing the gamma really helped in my case. I still wish I could have someone who knows what they are doing calibrate it for me...I just KNOW it would look better.

yea, don't get LCD if u plan on gaming, LCD's just don't refresh fast enough. i still prefer CRT for general viewing though, it doesn't strain my eye because sometimes my head moves and with CRT the colour won't change at different angles.

I would definately reccomend the Sony G520, its very sharp and has nice refresh rates at higher resolutions. well the sharpness actually would also depend on your vid card, but i used a matrox g400 to test it so it looks very clear to me. i would venture to say that sony monitors are also very reliable will last up to 10 years or more if u take good care of it ;)

That's not the problem. The problem is that the tube itself is not dark enough. There's no way you can use any software to solve that, since it's a tube problem. One way that may solve that is to use those screen filters, but that's not something I would do.
