I ordered a nic off ebay for an older desktop that the onboard nic had died on. The nic came n and I installed it with the driver that came with it and I ended up reinstalling windows vista and I can not find my driver cd. Any suggestions?

see if you can identify the make and number on the main chip on the nic.

Go right to whatever OEM made that chip.

ie, realtek, etc.

get the pci vendor information from the properties in device manager. A quick search on google for that will tell you who made it and what drivers you need.

There's no such thing, you need to know the chipset that the NIC uses.

Device Manager/right-click device/Properties/Detail tab and select the Hardware IDs dropdown. You'll see a series similar to - PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0760&SUBSYS_360A103C&REV_A2.

Go here and plug in the vendor (the first 4 alphanumerics that follow "Ven_") and device number (the first 4 alphanumerics that follow "Dev_") and you should be able to find out the Manufacturer and Model.

For a brain dead simple way to do this, drop the NIC into a Win7 machine and see what driver installs automatically. Then use that information to find a driver for your "older desktop."

i have a box of nic's and i usually find the netgear or intel nic's just work. keep them around for those pita restore procedures.

I keep a lot of the 3com 3c905tx nics. Been around for years and seem to work in everything .

my servers don't have any pci slots. you guys remember the ole faithful DEC 21164 b cards? those things ran on any o/s.

actually the best are simply the defaults for generic o/s in vmware

Lance chipset
e1000
etc.

I ended up installing this program that gave me a list of all hardware. I googled the name of the nic and after a few links was able to find the driver I needed
