I live in San Marcos, Texas. Some summers it stays above 100 F for over month. That's not so horrible, but the 700 sq. ft. house I live in was built in the forties and doesn't have central air or decent insulation for that matter (Ya, I know why the hell would I buy a house with no central air in the middle of Texas, well the house was a super deal and it's on the river, and besides my plan is to fix up the house when I get it paid off, which won't be too long with the deal I got.) My bedroom has a wall unit, but I turn it off when I'm gone. My computer is in the living room, where the temperature right now it 83 F and it's 7:30 in the morning, and thats with the portable air conditioner I have in here running (it's not enough BTUs for the size of the room, but I don't have 1000 bucks for one that does.) You could imagine how hot it gets in the middle of the day when the sun is cheerfully pounding the 12 X 6 ft. window that faces directly west there. My computer gets molten some days. I was playing Painkiller last night an my rig froze up twice. N-E-Ways I'm look'in for the highest CFM 120mm fans I can find. Sound isn't an issue as I have a tornado on an SLK-800 and that puts out a racket, but not as much as the turbine fan I got at Wally World that's blowing into my open case right now, and beside I always have music blasting so I don't really hear them that much. My goal is to be able to have the side on my case so my cat quits messing around inside the case. Right now I have 4 80mm, the PSU fans, and a 120mm. Two exhaust 80's, two 80 intakes, and the 120mm on the bottom as an intake. My CPU right now with no load is at 50c it's pretty simple to figure out what happens when I play games or even worse run prime. I'm planning on putting another exhaust 120mm on the top and an 80mm in the window over the PCI slots. I'm also going to replace the 120mm at the bottom if I like the new 120mm I get.

My Rig:
Chenming 602 Case
AMD XP 2500 @ 2363 Mhz
Asus A78NX nForce2 Deluxe-E
Radeon 9800 Pro
512 MB Geil PC 3500 Ram
2 WD 36 Gig 10K Raptors Raid 0
2 Segate 200 gig 7200.7
2 Maxtor 80 Gig Diamond Max 9's
SI Serial ATA PCI RAID Card
External Memorex 40X burner
Internal Lite-On DVD Burner
Antec TruPower 430 Watt Power Supply

Hey man, I feel for you :( I recommend the Vantec Thermoflow 120mm. I got this fan to cool my system down and it is almost noiseless! And YES, it blows out up to 92 CFM of air when needed! It's thermally controlled, which means the rpm's gonna go up as the temp goes up. It comes for I $30 CND, I don't know how much that's in USD. But IMO, it's one helluva fan!

That sounds like a super fan, I'll probably get that if no one else knows of a stronger one. Has anyone heard of one with higher CFM?

www.bgmicro.com in Garland, TX has a nice variety of fans at low cost, but you will often have to mod the connectors for your purposes as they frequently don't come with computer standard connectors (or any connector at all).
Here's one example:
"Texas Twister"
Product Description
Wanna start a tornado in your living room? This one will do it. Nidec TA450DC, Model B34262-34. 12Vdc/800mA., 4.72" (120mm)x1-1/2"(38mm), 4050RPM, ball bearing, 53.5 dBA, and 130CFM. Four lead wires, two power terminations. Low-pass/high-fail-68 alarm circuit terminated in third lead wire. Fan speed control circuit terminated in fourth lead. FAN1067.....

You might want to start thinking about a water cooling setup for your computer. Air cooling will only cool so much when the ambient temperature is above 80F. Other than that you also want to consider a phase change cooling setup like vapo-chill. For cooling your entire room, I have seen 1 ton window units (12,500 BTU) for under $300 and they're super efficent at what they do. I don't think a 120mm fan in yuour case is going to help that much when your in a hot environment

I have a 10K BTU portable air conditioner because the window is one giant pane that doesn't open, no good for a decent wall unit. The house is cynder block covered in stucco so I also haven't been too keen on cutting holes in the walls for a giant wall unit. I actually have a vapor phase setup, but I need some help modifing it for a newer socket. I have an old .Kryotech SuperG unit with a bad board (not mobo, the board that controls all the cooling stuff). The compressor and all that stuff is fine though. I will need a new enclosure for the processor, as well as mods to control all the refrideration stuff. I will definantly get that going soon (summer school programming classes and 40 hours a week a work don't make for much time), but for now I wanted to try the fans just to see if that can do anything. If not, what am I out, 30 bucks or so and if it doesn't work I'll sell the fans; I think it's worth a try. The turbine fan (this link you have to copy into the browser http://www.lakewoodeng.com/fanpgs/mtf15.html )can dissapate enough heat with the side off, so my thinking is the right fan setup inside would do the same or very close. I actually thought about modding a case and building it around one of those cheapo turbine tower fans in the front, but then there's that time thing again. N-E-Way any ideas would be helpful. :)

give up. with air cooling your not going to go below ambient. what cpu do u have that requires a tornado? i have a barton at 2.3ghz 1.9v and its only slk800 + low rpm 92mm fan. n/m i looked.. still doenst make sense to use a tornado.

anyways, i got a chieftec ase too. make sure to cut out the metal fan grills on the front behind the plastic grates, and the back. they only block air flow. make your system more efficient. i have 4hd's alone in mine, all pci slots filled with knicknacks, and i run all the fans at 1/2 speed or so using a fan controller.

what you need are some good curtains or miniblinds.

the question is.. are your case temps really that higher then ambient. if they aren't, then the airs doing as much as it can already. sending more through isnt going to do much. blowholes are possible with that case i think, but those are loud... are you mistaking a bad overclock as system being too hot. run stress tests like prime95 on your cpu to see if its really stable.

My chip is a Barton 2500 at 1.8 voltage, but when I OC it in the winter I can get it even higher than 2.36 usually around 2.48. Cut the metal over the fans, good idea, I didn't think of that. I've also considered blow holes. I have great miniblinds, curtains, and I even tinted the window with reflective tint (if I put up foil my neighbour will never leave me alone, he bugs me when I don't bring my trash can in, if he saw foil in the window, he'd probably kill me) I've ran prime all night long on cooler days and the chip does fine, so I know the chip is good, it's just the sweltering heat. I usually end up running the chip at stock speeds on those frying July evenings to keep it from locking up when I game, or worse write programs for school. You guys are probably right about the ambient temp being to high, I just wanted to try air cooling.

so it really is just the cpu being borderline. unless your case temp isn't way above ambient, theres only so much blasting the hot ambient air over the cpu will do. you need a better cooler for such a borderline overclock. water if what you need. heres some mad crazy info on oc http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=187887

Gizzo's fan database

This site lists specs for tons of fans. This 120mm page has some fast ones at the bottom... fastest Sunon pushing 195cfm. Some of the more exotic models (probably the fastest ones) may be somewhat hard to find, but if you're determined I'm sure you can get them, or have someone get them for you (special order from someone with a sunon distributor or something).

Either way, that's a good starting place for fans.

I have one of these and it really moves the air. Hell, after messing with this, a 195CFM Sunon sounds downright scary. This fan will reverse the air flow in your other case fans if you have them working against each other. $5 is pretty cheap, plus it comes with a finger guard. The plug on it can plug into motherboards, though at 14.4W you'd want to run it off an adaptor hooked up to a regular 4 pin molex.

Hey guys thanks for all the input. I decided to go with a couple of these fans. If it doesn't work out I'll sell them in the forums. If it does, my computer will probably fly away. :)
