Is the voltage controlled through the motherboard???

How can you control the voltage on the fans to bring the RPM down???

Does the controller come with the fan???

If I go with the MassCool, I would be running about 4 together. Can I control all of them?

The Scythe would be running alone as a #1 fan, blowing my hard drive. But I don't see a fan controller!!

Please advise where to buy.

5 volts is a little on the low side. Some fans will have a problem with that... but the price is right, I guess, as long as you keep that in mind! 😉

Personally, I'd spend the extra 10 bones, but that's just me...

5 V is the bottom of its adjustment range. It goes up to 12 V.

The Vantec model is smaller and available in black, and the CoolerMaster has LEDs that can change color. Other than those aesthetic differences, they are essentially the same product.

Many fans won't spin-up (start spinning) when they're undervolted to 5V! Generally, 7V is as low as you'll ever want to go with a controller. Running a 12V fan undervolted to 5V is just asking for trouble!

That's why most high quality fan controllers only go down to 7V...

As long as you're aware of this caveat with cheap fan controllers... no harm, no foul... 😉

Sunbeam Rheobuss for 12.95

Personally that PWNS the vantec at 10 dollars cheaper, and it even pwns the zalman which is 29.95. Ive had all three, and i keep going back to sunbeam if i need a controler.

Theres silver ones also if your looking for silver.

Don't turn it down to its minimum setting, and you don't have a problem. If it really bothers you, break the fan controller open and flip the Vcc and Gnd connections on the potentiometers. Beats wasting $10.

In a perfect world, yes...

However (for instance) some ppl have kids in diapers, running around the house, turning every knob they see -- the knobs get turned accidently when someone is dusting -- and so forth, and so on.

Anyway, your call. Do whatever you want!

I think it's false economy! Hell, I throw $10 to waitresses at lunch, if they keep my water glass full -- and don't think a thing about it... you know? 😀
 
Thanks for the recommendations. I think I'll stick to the Scythe 1000rpm 19dBa 100mm fan. No need for fan controlling since it's already dead silent. This thing could blow my hard drive all day and not make a sound!!

kinda surprsed no one mentioned the 7 volt molex mod,
considering as it's free and it seems OP's biggest concern is money

Yep, yep, yep, I've got a sunbeam on one of my rigs, excellent piece of hardware but I like my Zalman ZM-MFC1 on my main rig cause it has pretty lights an mo buttons fo to push!
