So I need a new dvd burner, but I'm thinking of picking up a blu-ray drive.

Most blu-ray drives come with a DVD burner, right?

Yes, but...

BR burners are insanely expensive as well as media for them.
But it's your cash. You can spend it any way you like. ;)

The discs are still way too expensive. By the time discs are reasonably priced Blu-ray burners will be a lot cheaper, and a lot faster.

not really worth it. just get a $25-$30 DVD burner and save your cash. Blu-Ray burners are ~$400. cheaper if you only need a reader. but wait a while. it will soon get cheaper and faster. no reason to be an early adopter.

Still too much money, for both the drive and media IMO. For $50 or less you can buy a good DVD±RW drive and a 100-pk of DVD media.

if you are going to go blueray now I would recommend this drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16827136137, its one of the fastest and cheapest blue ray drives, plus it can read hd-dvd as well if you care about that. Disks are still expensive at 10+ for single layer (though I did see some for 8 once), but prices will drop. If you don't intend to use the drive to watch any movies then I would agree with everyone else, just buy a dvd burner, and in a year or so pick up a blueray burner for less then half of what it would cost now. If you do watch movies on your pc (or have it connected to an hdtv) then go for it.

Many of us got used to the rational that if ?we already have to upgrade we might as well?.

This rational works if it was, I need a new Burner that cot $30 ,than I might as well buy a Burner that does X and cost $50.

This Projective Thinking is Not rational if the ?might as well? costs few hundred $$$.

If you functionally need a Blu Ray buy it, otherwise the need of a regular Burner should Not be an excuse to Burn Money.

Are you saying you might as well get a Blu-Ray burner or you might as well get a Blu-Ray reader? They have blu-ray readers for like $120 that also burn DVDs. In that case the 'might as well' is still quite a bit more but not so unreasonable.
