I'm not upgrading to C2D or AM2. Out of the question for now, but what would be the best bang for buck dual core? And newegg is out, I'm Canadian.

I knew that ;) But what would you recommend? I can get some of the Opterons and the regular X2's still.

Opteron 165 or the 170 if the price is reasonable. The 170 is nice because the 10x multiplier might be useful if you don't have a high-end overclocking board and can't hit high HTT speeds.

Opteron 165. $155 or something like that @the Egg. Easy 2.70~2.80GHz on STOCK voltage.

Only because it has a relatively high price premium for a chip that probably doesn't OC much higher than the cheaper chips. I am having trouble actually finding a 4800+ 939 chip on sale but if it is close to the Opteron 180 in price it's almost twice the price of the Opty 165. At the $300 mark, a C2D starts looking more reasonable.

No... This is like the 3rd thread where you think AMD is still god... They are good, but C2D destroys them. Why do you think I am trying to sell all of mine....

In Canada? Man, you're gonna be hurting. If you find a chip new, get it fast. or buy one from Markfw900 since he's bailing out as fast as he can.

Man, it's tough to get caught holding a bunch of equipment that's obsolete overnight. It must really suck. :)

Well, I for one don't really want to buy a new computer every six months or so, but then I don't run a private business or anything. I'm still happy with my S939 system and just grabbed one of the last 4800+ chips from NewEgg as a final CPU upgrade. Yeah, the C2Ds smoke, but I spent enough money on this that I want to get more life out of it. Maybe in a year or so I'll switch over, but who knows what the landscape will look like then? Then 4-cores will be standard and we'll still be stuck with junk software that doesn't make use of them.

Besides, it's not as if AMD stuff is junk. My system is much faster than anything that anyone, even the CEO, has at my office. A C2D does not make you more of a man. (Unless you're a LAN Party habitue, in which case I stand corrected.)

Not only that, but it's not just the CPU. Getting Core2D requires a complete system rebuild. A lot of us don't want to do that yet.

Hey GD, long time no see. (I've been so freakin' busy I haven't been hanging around much lately.

Why don't you sell one of your Les Pauls to get a CPU upgrade already? :p I just got one of the last 4800+s. Are you just gonna go get a Conroe? Or is that overclocked-the-snot-out-of 3700+ still running your music software just fine?

Best, DM

GuitarDaddy, may i ask which BIOs version you are using with your a8n-sli deluxe?

my board is currently using version 1014. and is wondering if 1013 will support opteron165 or not. read about the good OC abilitly with 1013. ^^

Good to see ya, DM

I've got another X2 box that I built several months ago that I use for music and video encoding, but I'm still using the old 3700+ for my daily email and net surfer. Probably going to upgrade it to a conroe after christmas, don't really need to but I've been fighting off the upgrade bug for a while now and can't resist much longer:eek:

That would be silly, better of with a just as cheap Opteron 165, Dual Cores and with OC to FX-55 Speeds

I'm wondering the same thing. I want to upgrade to dual core before all of the 939 x2 chips are gone. From reading this thread it sounds like the Opteron 165 is a good chip. I also see the Athlon x2 4400 for sale at newegg. I have a DFI Lanparty NF4 Ultra motherboard. Which of these chips would be a better purchase?

Opteron 165 - $158
Athlon x2 4400 - $175

I'm not overclocking right now but I might ovreclock if it is relatively easy to do and there is a big gain. Thanks for any help you can give me.
