Ok, after almost a month, my stolen Dodge Dakota was recovered. It's now in the body shop getting the ignition, steering column and door locks repaired. When all is done, I'm going to get a car alarm for my $20,000 pickup so this doesn't happen again. Can anyone recommend a good brand of Car Alarm? I've never purchased one before and I don't know which ones are best, at a reasonable price.

Viper............ that's all you need to know. Go for a custom one so you can get addons like opening the doors though telephone and all that.

There's one they use in Middle Eastern countries that will shoot a flame 9 feet high...gets them every time.

If you want a good car alarm go with the higher end which is either Clifford or DEI. DEI would be great because it would include a car alarm, keyless entry and remote starter (for those cold mornings you want to start up your truck without leaving the house).

uhmm, why hasn't anybody recommended LoJack? Its hidden somewhere in your car, and when you report it stolen, its used by the police to find stolen vehicles, gives them the exact location. Very cool.

Lojack looks interesting but isn't available in Oregon :(

How much does it cost (parts & labor) and how much is the monthly charge?

let me put it this way alarms are useless.I have a friend that came home lock his car and went in to his house for about 10 minutes when he came out his car was gone.He had lojack so he called police and told his car was stolen and he never seen his car agen. A police officer explained it to him this way. The theft probley went in to some underground gurage where and cause the police can't get find the signal cause the car is under ground u can say that your car is gone for ever. Alot of theft still the cars not to drive it but to sell peaces of your car.

No device will stop your car from being stolen... heck, if car thieves really want your car, they can just get a tow truck or something...

A car alarm (or a club) is to prevent some small car thieves to even try and steal your car...

That being said, I recommend Clifford for car alarms...

However, keep in mind proper installation of the alarm is very important as well... even the best alarm can become useless if not installed properly (ie. wires and switches not hidden well enough)...
