Here at UF, people abandon their bikes like nothin. Every year, the police department remove all of the bikes from all of the racks and auction them. Seeing rusty neglected bikes make me cry.

Do you seriously intend on using the bike for more than a month?

I have about $150 to spend on a bicycle that can get me around town easily. I might spend around $30 or so on a lock, so a total of 180 to 200 bucks. I dont really care about any special stuff, as long as it gets me around town and doesn't hurt mr. happy or his nutty friends on the bumps 😉

any suggestions?
I think bolt cutters are like 20 bucks max right? Grab a pair of those and you are set.

are bikes easy to trace?

My mom found a bike for $5 at a garage sale.

Had two flats, which me and my dad fixed easily. About $30 in repairs total (some break work). So a bike for $35.

Got this about 4 years ago. Just rode it tonight. Greatest deal ever. Runs nice enough.

How much is that thing worth new?
At my local shop the 7100 sells for 220$+6%sales tax. The 7200 you linked is about 280$. My bro bought the 7300 with suspension fork and I've rode it, it is way sweet for the road! I would wager I could smoke most of the wannbe roadies around here on it. Any of those 3 are great around town because you can still hop curves and charge other obstacles that you might nuke a roadie on.

Go pester your local bike shops and see if they have any "mechanic's specials" sitting around (bikes that were brought in for repairs and never picked up). You can get some wicked deals on decent bikes that way. Also, bike guys are raging pack-rats....odds are they have a few older bikes sitting around that they might part with for a few hundred bucks...I picked up a nice Diamondback MTB for my wife this way ($50!!).

That's exactly what I did way back when. I got a "Muddy Fox" (now defunct English Co.), with an assortment of used parts for next to nothing. A little knowledge of basic bike maintenance and this kind of bike is MASSIVE bang for the buck.

fvck...my LBS has the 7100 for 290, the 7200 for 350, and the 7300 for 500 :Q 🙁

You need a good used bike to get a nice midrange bike for your price.

My barely used 2001 (or 2000, nobody seems to be able to tell me) Trek 7300 was $240, in stock at a LBS. Well, it was really $300 after the new Shimano trigger shifters. OK, it was $370 after the new seat and seat post. Um, it was $390 after the new handlebars and neck. Honestly, it was $430 after the new cyclo-cross tires. And it?s going to go up some more, LOL. New pedals, new cassette, new triple-Ultegra crank set, new Avid brakes. Hopefully, that will do for awhile.

I caught upgrade-itis with this one, but I'm still ahead monetarily by starting with a used bike. 🙂 I love my custom Trek 7300. I'm finally able to enjoy cycling again.

In fact, the temp has gone down 12 degrees F in the last few hours. I think I'm going for a ride. 😀
