SO, We are ordering this beast http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822102050 to replace 3 smaller Thecus units (N7700) we have here at work, Issue im having is finding drives for the silly thing.

We have been using Seagate Barracuda XT's in the N7700s with great luck, the 1.5 TB 64mb Cache versions. We were planning on simply getting the same drives but the 3TB versions however they now seem to be extreamly hard to find now. (stupid floods).

What out there is compairable?

yeah, bad timing.. i had 2 month wait for the seagate 2tb es drives from the flood. order in december and just got 2 last week.. hard hard to get

yea its annoying. mainily looking form something similar at this point, similar price/preformance as the XTs. they will be in a raid 6 array, main issue is finding 20 of any 1 drive. i think i may be doing multipal orders anyway

I had two of the Seagate Baraciuda 3TB drives (1TB platters) in December from Amazon ($178) and both of them failed within a couple days. I wouldn't recommend them. Maybe older the XT version without the 1TB platters would be more reliable.

By the way, your title says 3GB.

personally, with samsung out of the game and just letting stock run out; i go with hitachi drives. i just did a similar setup as you but with 2TB drives. my distributor, luckily, was able to get me external 2TB drives at their normal price when individual drives were through the roof 🙂

Unfortunately WD doesn’t make 7200RPM drives bigger than 2 TB, so you’re SOL there.

Given the choice between Seagate and Hitachi, I’d go with Hitachi.

Get enterprise class drives, especially with that huge array. A little home 2-4 disk array might be fine with home drives, but get enterprise for that beast

Did Samsung stop making HDs? I loved their spinpoints and was waiting to get more when prices dropped...

we dont really need any of the features the enterprise ones offer, and its really not worth it at 2x the cost with no 3 TB option. the XTs we have been using have been fine, we have 21 of them total in 3 7 drive arrays, we have had 1 HDD failure in 3 years,

... J/K :awe:

HAHA, I had just scrolled down far enough to see the first part of your post but couldn't see the J/K... I was already composing a scathing response!

Samsung and Hitachi hdd divisions were bought out within the past year or so by seagate and WD.
