The ultimate love story, no matter what, Forrest was always waiting and willing to love her no matter what.

Also, Forrest was supposed to symbolize purity and the american ideals.

Yep, and Jenny's life was just the opposite. Forrest grew up in a comfortable home with a loving mother and Jenny grew up dirt poor with no mother and a father who molested her. Both were confronted with the changing times of the sixties, Forrest stayed himself and never wavered; Jenny got caught up in them and lost her way.

Jenny loved Forrest, she always loved him, but because of the sexual abuse by her father she didn't feel like she was good enough for him. He was pure and idealistic. She saw herself as dirty and was cynical about life.

They were symbols of the times.

You can't run away from AIDS, Forest... You and the little bastard.

I actually didn't like the movie. The message of the movie is that if you blindly accept orders like an idiot you'll go far - if you allow yourself to get stepped on, abused, and remain loyal after you're treaded like sh*t then you'll get rewarded and meet great people, ending up being a great hero.

If you're like Jenny and joined a counter culture -if you protested for civil rights and fought for what you believed in then, well, you're a dirty hippy and die of AIDS.

What I never understood was that if he's capable of running across America 3-4 times around why was he waiting for a bus?

I mean he did say his running days were over but when he learned that Jenny's place was close he did run anyway. In the two hours he took to tell that story he easily would've been able to run to wherever Jenny's place was.

That's an interesting way to look at it. I personally saw it as if you're determinated and have an optimistic view on everything, you'll get far in life, even without brains.
Forrest Gump was an idiot, but whenever he persued something, he would put all his effort into it, and just give it all he has. That's why he succeeded.
It kinda goes with what Thomas Edison says, "Success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration."

Jenny on the other hand, was cynical and pessimistic about life.

NEVER SAY ANOTHER BAD WORD ABOUT BUTTERCUP!!!

Er, I mean, yeah, she sucked.

I agree with a couple of the above posters.

The movie seemed to say that ignorance and simplicity were ethically superior to intelligence. They may be right, but a lot of people here would then be damned.

But he didn't know he was being stepped on, he was just being who he was. That is the whole point. Read Flowers for Algernon for anothe perfect example of what Forrest was going through.

Now I know that Forrest wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, but why the hell did he keep pursuing Jenny and lettin' her creep back into his life.

The only time she wanted to be with him is when she found out that she was gonna croak.

Did you miss the part where he's a retard?
(Granted, I'd do the same for a piece of ass, but at least I have motivation.)

anti-smartass answer:
Love. Unconditional Love, actually.
It's why everyone loved him. He embodied and displayed the Four Absolutes.
It was a brilliant underplot that worked wonders for the story.

Poor Forrest. 🙁 :brokenheart:

Poor Forrest? It wasn't like he was like getting all the babes. That was about the best he was going to get.
