I must re-load the modem each time that I boot my MSI KT7 PRO

I'm stumped and the local techies around here can't help. It's time to ask for outside help. First the system is a Microstar KT7 PRO (the Gateway version ) K7T Pro (MS-6330 with out onboard sound) AMD Duron 700, 256MB of PC100 (I could never get it to take the PC133 SDRAM), Nvida 16Mb AGP, Zoom 56K V90, Asound PCI sound card, running W98 SE O/S. One more thing when the problem started I had a WD 102BA 7200 UDMA 66 IDE HDD in it. Since the problem reared it's ugly head I swapped it out with a Seagate ST34321A and replaced the Zoom modem with a much easier to load PC TEL PCI 56K modem.

Here is my problem. The computer was running great on Jan. 31, 2001. On Feb. 1, the following morning, I clicked on the dialer (common TCP/IP setup) to access my ISP. I received the error message code #666 and the modem wouldn't dial. I joked to a friend that the Satan hacked my computer. Anyway, I messed with every setting and re-setup everything that I could think of in Windows and tweak UI and then I decided that the modem some how went bad. I replaced it with an inexpensive PCTEL modem, fired it back up and it ran great as if nothing ever happened.

A few hours later it froze up and I was forced to re-boot. I did. I tried to return to my work on line and I got another error message when the modem started to dial. This time it was error message #630. I checked in the device manager to see if there was an error sign or any remark about it, none. So, I went into the modem section in Control Panel and tested the modem and the port in the diagnostics tab. It showed that the modem was loaded and that the drivers were installed, but it gave me an error message "couldn't open port".

I reloading the PCTEL modem a half dozen times over the day and it worked great each time until you re-boot or shut down. Then the modem has to be reinstalled each and every time. I got fed up with this madness and came to the conclusion that maybe I've been hacked or picked up a virus that Norton can't find. I had a Seagate that I used on the system when I first built it still setup to run on it. I felt that if I put it in my problems would be solved.

No such luck. The only problem that the Seagate solved was that it no longer locks up, but I still have to re-load the modem every time I boot this damn thing. I have run every diagnostic program that I can think of. I have used W98 SE troubleshooter. I have run every port tool that I could get my hands on and everything tells me that the computer is running fine. Please help if you can
