I grew up in Portland, OR... lived there till I was about 10, and my parents moved us out to NJ so that my mom could be with her twin sister, who was dying from cancer.

that was 15 years ago... I still miss the Pac Northwest a lot. I'd kill to move back there, but I've never quite managed to find a way to make the move.

VA sucks. I've lived here as long as I can remember. It's boring as all hell. Sure, the scenery's nice, sure, I can own any gun the feds will let me, sure, there's a lot of history here... but I still want to live elsewhere. Ah well, hopefully I can get a taste of MD (which also isn't too good, in my experience) if I get into Hopkins, then who knows.

Its not really the state I miss, but the people

I also miss all the ducks, geese, swans and squirrels I would see

VA is a big state... NOVA is pretty nice...

NOVA is nice. We are 3 hours from the beach, an hour from the mountains. Close to DC and Baltimore and it?s very culturally diverse.

Virginia Beach is:thumbsdown: to much pollution from the james river and from factories in jersey

I usually go to Rehoboth beach.

I still miss OH and I moved from there in 92. Alabama is nice but Ohio always feels like "home"

I live in MD but borderline VA and DC. I plan on actually moving to NOVA once I get a job there. jbourne if you think there is nothing but farms and mountains in VA you really need to go to NOVA. It is a very great place with a lot of great people and A LOT of things to do. Great night life, great restaraunts all around (DC, Bethesda, Arlington), it's like 3 hours from 4-5 different beaches, and we get all 4 seasons around here.

Granted I really am sick of cold weather, the weather right now is perfect.

I stopped missing it after I went and vacationed there, and then I felt that Virginia was my home. Hopefully it wont take as long for California to feel like home.

Edit: I dont really miss Virginia as a state, but I miss Virginia because of the people that live there

I lived in VA for 10 years (my first 10 years before I moved to TX). I still miss a lot of things about Virginia. The weather and beautiful landscape, but I definitely see myself as a Texan now. Give it time, you will grow to love Texas.

Yeah you're right, low taxes, "good" gun laws, good roads, beautiful scenery, effective local governments, all add up to make it a sucky state.

I agree Ausm

:) Agreed.

Really great place to live.

But Texas definitely has its perks too.

Mostly in Va. Beach, but I lived in Chesterfield County for 6 years. I loved both places. What part of TX did you live in when you were here?

Virginia does not have low taxes, they have a state income tax, tolls on roads, yearly car tax, and for some reason they tax you on groceries. And the city I lived in Richmond, had a 10.5% prepared meals tax which is ridiculous.

effective local governments? Why is the capital of Virginia consistently on the top 10 highest crime rate cities and for a few years in the 90s was the murder capital?

State income tax? There is something like 8 states that don't have income tax. Toll roads? Where? I can think of 1, the Dulles expressway. Car tax is cheap, my car costs ~$100 a year, big deal. Sales tax on food dropped recently to 2.5%. When was the last time you heard of a gov't dropping taxes? Richmond is a sh!thole, but every state has one.

I live in Fairfax County. I pay NOTHING to my county in taxes, yet I receive in return, a large police presence (it's very safe here), tons of parks and recreational areas, good roads, trash pickup, etc. All of this is paid for by real estate taxes, which is less than 1% (0.89% to be exact). We used to have a $25 yearly vehicle decal, but they decided to get rid of that. When was the last time you heard of a gov't eliminating a source of funding?

ummm no, most cities in VA have 10% food tax when you eat outside, VA has sh!tty gun laws, beautiful scenery award goes to West Virginia, no effective governments really, local roads suck, etc.

Yeah, virginia doesn't have beautiful scenery. Yeah, Virginia has sh!tty gun laws. You lost all credibility by saying those two things.
