Per a guy from Church who is a real pilot, these things are kind of boring.
Well, yeah, simming can be boring. Especially if you dare do a long haul flight. No way in hell am I flying from KJFK to Heathrow non-stop. If I go long-haul I take stops along the way, save and resume the flight. So I hop from one airport to the next. To me landing is the best experience. Especially if it's a CAT-III landing. I was flying into Nassau Bahamas and on approach it was zero visibility (I use live weather) and the felling you get seeing the approach lights and PAPI only 100 or less feet AGL from the runway is awesome! I mean, you have to depend on your instruments and only your instruments. Pretty bad ass. Especially if you fly the fully laden PMDG 737NG.
If I want to get somewhere in a hell of a hurry I take the F-22 up to 40,000 @ mach 2. LOL
I guess it's the technicality of it all. From reading the SIDS and STARS, plotting your route and cruising altitude to using all the gauges. You can really get into it and fly online with human ATC in VATSIM. But you need to know general flying principals. Like reading and interpreting an airport chart and following procedures and ATC instructions. So if ATC says turn left 142 degrees, descend and maintain 8,000, contact tower on 133.150 you better be able to repeat that all back and follow through.
