I might join the tablet phenomenon :(

My tablet is perfect for Words with Friends. Couldn't play it on my phone - just too small.

But everything else? I'll use the desktop if I'm there anyway, or the laptop if I'm watching TV. I prefer a full-size keyboard, as the tablet's on-screen keyboard sucks. I'm not adding a keyboard to the the tablet, if I need something that big, the laptop provides a better overall experience.

The tablet is better to travel with than the laptop. Reading on it is good, for short periods. It does get heavy after a half-hour or so.

I read a ton of magazines and articles on my tablet. It's much more convenient to do it relaxing with a tablet in hand than on a desktop or laptop computer. Tablets just make it easier.

One thing I don't understand is how people watch movies AT HOME on tablets. No access to a TV? I guess if you have kids and wife and they hog all the TV's but tablets can cost as much as a TV. I just don't understand that one.

i got my kids a cheap-o for this. nook hd+ for like $130 a couple of years ago. perfectly fine for netflix and ripped movies in the car, or the bedrooms where i dont have a tv

I might pull the trigger on a dell venue 11 pro I think, not really sure yet.

Surface Pro 2 with 4 gigs RAM is what I would get. Still working on work to get me one. They just had a $300 price drop, so that might help.

Or if I could somehow manage to convince them I need it to redo the company website, that would work.

Yup

I didn't really care for the original Nexus 7 but the new one is solid. Then instead of being stuck using Amazon's system, you could use Amazon, B&N (nook) or Google's own magazines. Even though I no longer have a nook, their store is the only one that had a magazine I wanted. I can read it on any Android device.

It's annoying that you can't access amazon prime streaming with a standard android device, unless they changed that.

I have a Kindle Fire with jellybean running on it, and even though the ROM I used is supposed to broadcast the unit as a Kindle, because I'm using Google's Android platform I can't use the Prime streaming app :\

If you only want a smaller tablet (7") check out Sprint. You can get the Samsung Tab3 for $49 if you sign up for a data plan...from as little as $5/month. Use it only with wi-fi and you don't run up big data charges.

That's actually not bad at all if it isn't meant to leave the house. The Tab3 isn't a 'great' tablet at all, but it's not terrible either especially for just reading in bed and messing around looking up stuff in the living room while watching TV.

I couldn't find a $5/month plan though, the lowest available for me is $10/month for 100 MB. Can you confirm?

Watch Netflix all the time in bed with the smartphone or ipad. Or when I'm getting the kids to sleep in their room.

Lol, no TV in the bedroom? What year is this? 1982?
We have a large first floor with everything and the second floor is all bedrooms. We're not kids. We don't go to the bedroom to be entertained or seek alone time like teens or renters in a shared apt would. We go up there to sleep. I watch Netflix / airstream the PC in bed when I can't fall asleep or need to get tired enough to.

I'm a desktop-only kind of guy, but portables have their place - in bed or on the couch.

what I really want is the surface pro 2, but it's a little out of my price range (I'd want the 128gb version and that one is pricey here in Denmark, especially for a student that doesn't really need a tablet just wants one for no particular reason). The last gen surface pro has dropped quite a bit in price but I just can't decide if I want the venue 11 with bay trail (cheaper, quiter and more battery life)or the more expensive and more powerful last gen surface pro, I'm leaning a little towards cheaping out now and then seeing what happens with the next gen surface pro.

the dell is 690 usd
the surface pro (128gb) is 900usd
the surface pro 2 (128gb) is 1400 usd

Ehh, I use full size PC for games, HTPC for media on projector. I use my phone if I am in the living room and want to get online from the couch.... I don't have a need for a tablet since my phone can do pretty much any tablet stuff.

I have purchased the orig Kindle Fire for my fiance years ago. I recently bought her a kindle fire HD (version with no ads, and with larger memory) and it was like $150...

She is on her kindle hours every day, she uses for podcasts, as media player, for reading books, magazines, and just about every other format.

I eventually would actually like a tablet too, would be great for when there's nice weather, when I go outside to the back deck to smoke cigars, it would be nice to have a decent tablet to watch netflix or youtube while I enjoy the cigar ... however, I think an indoor/outdoor TV with chromecast or roku would be far superior

I recently purchased one as a gift for my mother. I fought her hard on it telling her that she won't have nearly as many uses as she thinks she will. After playing around with it for a while she started asking questions about if it can do this and that. I had to tell her again that it can't do everything that a normal computer can and that it's more of a complement. I have a feeling it's gonna go mostly unused.

What does your mom do on the computer other than internet and email?

Tech people need to embrace tablets. Not everyone wants to run the latest game, or play with the latest beta xyz. A tablet connected to a wifi printer is perfect for many people who just want unhassled internet and email.

Joined it when Playbook came out... Unjoined it a year later and took a $400 loss selling it to a friend🙁. Me + tablet = not a good fit.

Stupid tablet choices aren't a good fit for anyone. The Playbook never did anything worth a darn other than email. Hell, even half the PDF's I threw at it wouldn't open. No good third party support.... or OEM support for that matter.

I've got a iPad (4th gen) and a Kindle Paperwhite. Use the crap outta both. I find that reading on the paperwhite (for books/text only) is better than the bright tablet screens. Sure for some apps you can turn down the brightness and invert, but yeah, paperwhite still wins.

Now, for mags, I do use the iPad. Some publishers really do a great job with the e-version, making the print even more irrelevant.

I've had 4 tablets. I just don't get enough use out of them.

I currently own eight iPads (6x 64gb and 2x 128gb) and a couple of iPad minis (16gb and 64gb). I also own about 10 tablets from HP, Sony and Amazon.

99% of my usage is from the iPads. The rest are just not as good.

... that is a lot of tablets. Can I has touchpad? 😛

I've been with the tablet phenomenon since almost the beginning. Had an iPad 1st gen, now got a 3rd gen. It's great for web browsing and the perfect travelling companion. I really wish they had them back when I was in university.

I love my Nexus 7, it's very easy to hold, fast enough, awesome screen, I read a lot of magazines and articles on it. No one really needs a tablet though, your phone basically does the same thing, just the extra screen real estate and high resolution is what makes it better.

Why? Desktops>Laptops>Tablets/Phablets/Etc..

I disagree. I use my phablet more than anything and I love it. I have a couple desktops that I hardly use. I have a laptop that I never touch. I think I still have a tablet unless lil rudeguy lost it.

If I could have a 6.5" phone, that would be perfect.

Since my illness I have been in the hospital a lot and let me tell you having a tablet is great there. A table is just great for when you want a multimedia device and a laptop would be too large or cost too much to risk in the environment you are going.

That said, I had free internet access in the hospital and despite their blocking of sites like Netflix I found free full movies on youtube and other places.

I've been using a Mega for a while. 6.3". Works great.
