FSU = famous for party.....

check usnews.com for latest rating.

1. what is your budget?
2. Prepare 25-35K/year if u are out of state student attending non-public school.

are you a genius?

u sure u can handle comp eng and sci together?

I second that. What is your background & acadamic standing ?

You will have plenty of time to decide what major u want in the 1st/2nd year.

The original poster who is thinking of double major in CompEng/Comp Science seems don't have a clue WTF he is thinking/talking.
Double major in these 2 field = commit suicide.

R.P.I is a great school!!! I will be attending grad school there as soon as im through with Univ. of Hawaii. I wanted to do undergrad there also, but got stuck at SUNY Albany because RPI is EXPENSIVE!!! I have many family members and friends who are grads of RPI and I haven't heard anything poor about the school.

well, before we even get to the slashing, double major in CE and CS = pointless

there's such a huge overlap in courses for the majors that most schools probably won't even let you double major in those two fields. i know mine won't!

here is the undergrad list for CE:

1.Massachusetts Inst. of Technology
2.Carnegie Mellon University (PA)
3.Stanford University (CA)
4.University of California?Berkeley *
5.U. of Illinois?Urbana-Champaign *
6.University of Michigan?Ann Arbor *
7.University of Texas?Austin *
8.Cornell University (NY)
9.Georgia Institute of Technology *
10.Princeton University (NJ)
11.University of Washington *
12.California Institute of Technology
13.Purdue Univ.?West Lafayette (IN)*
14.Univ. of Wisconsin?Madison *
15.Univ. of California?Los Angeles *
16.Rice University (TX)
17.North Carolina State U.?Raleigh *
18.Univ. of California?San Diego *
19.Virginia Tech *

I wouldn't mind leaving the state though but would be cheap for me if i stay that is of course if UF or FSU is any good.

You will not be double majoring in computer engineering and computer science at UF. The way it is set up does not allow for that. The programs are rather confusing and it takes a little while to understand because whoever thought up this plan is stupid. There is one computer science dept. It has majors in 3 schools: business, liberal arts, and engineering. To make things more complicated, there are 2 Computer Engineering majors, one that is hardware through the EE dept and one that is software through the CS dept. You can only major in one of any of the above. One double major that is common though is EE + CE. However, that is more hardware oriented because the CE + EE are both in the EE dept for that double major usually.

I am doing the computer engineering in the CS dept but 2 of my roommates are doing the CE + EE double major that I described above. I cannot speak for FSU because I have no information about their program nor do I know anyone in their program. It is a tough deal to turn down Bright Futures if you are getting it. The program at UF is pretty good especially if you do well enough to take advantage of the special opportunities such as University Scholars and IPPD (look them up at www.scholars.ufl.edu and www.ippd.ufl.edu ) if you are interested.

If you have more questions about UF, send me a PM.

R.P.I is a great school. Unfortunately, the surrounding area in Troy, NY sucks. Big reason why I didn't go there. Ended up going to SUNY Binghamton to save some money and get the best state school eduation you can get in NY. I got my B.S. in Computer Engineering in '02. There is really no point to also doing CS unless you love programming. We had plenty of programming classes in our CoE curriculum mainly in C++ but if you want to also learn Java, etc, a minor in C.S. may be doable. I took a Win 32 API/MFC in Visual C++ class as an elective which was fun and wasn't required in my engineering curriculum.

Wisconsin Madison also has one of the top Computer programs in the Industry. We regularly work and exchange people with berkley and do some groundbreaking database work.

I say attend any undergrad university in Florida, cause truthfully, most of the good ones aren't around you and it's a long way to travel to get your butt kicked by EECS or CECS whatever you're doing. Save it for graduate school. :D

But wouldn't it be easier to get into grad school if you got a bs in a decent university?

It doesn't really matter where you went to undergrad. I went to an expensive school because I had to get out of state to get a good education. If you can go to UF for cheap, I'd consider it since it's at least a decent school. If you do well at UF, then you WILL get into a good graduate school.

Shhhh... don't let out the secret! Let him spend $150,000 on the same education he'd get at any reputable school. :)

You need to get U.S. News and World Report's college guide first of all. People here can give you personal opinions of schools, but U.S. News can give you all of the stats and the school's overall reputation. When you pick out a few schools that interest you, talk to a faculty member in the department you're interested in. I don't know about most schools, but my college didn't allow you to get a double major in comp sci and comp eng because they are too similar. You'd have to double major in Physics and CompSci, which would cover all of the classes you would have taken for CompEng anyway.

Why you'd want to do that I have no idea.

Yeah but we don't have double majors, we have certificates. What the big diff is I don't know.
