I should just keep driving my 1994 Toyota Corolla into the ground until it stops running, who knows when that will be. I'd like to get a really good price like around $12,000

I'm considering the 2002 Hyundai Elantra GLS or GT and maybe even the Sonata (although this would be out of my price range).

How much are the Elantra GT's going for?
Can you get one without leather/sunroof/ABS?
How is the fit/finish/reliability for these cars?
 
Leather only. I've seen several of them without sunroof/abs.

Fit and finish is excellent for a $13,000 car. So is the backseat legroom. Has an excellent air conditioner and stock radio as well.

The GT is by far the best car in the Hyundai lineup, and IMHO, the best car you can get under $15,000. I bet you could walk away with an auto tranny one for under $14,000. Stick you can probably do for $13,000.

One thing to look at is the suspension type on the window sticker. There are two suspension offered - comfort and sport. They both cost the same, but drive quite different. Drive both to see what you like better. The comfort is softer, and more wallowly, the sport is a bit stiffer and rides better at highway speeds.

Accelleration was great for a 2L 4 banger in a stick shift form. I wasn't really impressed with the auto tranny ones though. The auto just seemed dumb. Wouldn't downshift quick enough and left you without any power. Maybe I was just used to driving a 4.3L V6 that was a grunt of an engine. I dunno. Definitely take it out for a nice long test drive to see what you think.

Also check the used lots as well. I've seen a couple used GT's showing up. Should be able to knock off $3k-$4k off the price of a new one. Hyundai's warranty on used vehicles is still pretty good as well.
 
i love the way the Elantra GT looks.. as a hatch back its quite hot looking..

I dont know about the ride quality and stuff since I havent been in one, but the specs look good.

The $1,500 premium for the GT will buy you leather-trimmed seats, steering wheel and shift knob; fog lamps; 15-inch alloy wheels; cruise control; keyless remote entry; a CD player; and rear disc brakes. You also get snazzy purple-illuminated gauges reminiscent of Volkswagens'. This is a pretty good bargain, since the accessory group that would comparably equip a VW GLS sedan will run you $1,275, and you still wouldn't have leather seats, foglights or the sport suspension.

 
i saw one of those the other day. 4 door hatch... definitely interesting looking. drive it, see if you like it, hyundai is getting to be pretty good these days.
 
really, though, my wife has like a 2000 or 1999 Hyundai Elantra and it's a (lemme run out and ck.) It's a GLS too. SHe does NOT have ABS, it's an auto and I think that we've got something like 25K on it or so...

anyway, we've got this REALY Wierd sound when we brake coming from the passenger rear area. only when we brake lightly though...when I hit it...and it's stopping rather quickly, NO sound...anyone have any ideas? The dealership has been BEYOND HELPLESS in this situation...otherwise we'd have NO complaints outta this car! I THINK that ConsumerReports rate this car as their #2 pick behind the Volkswagen something. 😉

Sorry Tanner the Brother HL-1440 is not an option with the Elantra but it is when you buy a motorcycle.

I'm concerned about build quality/fit & finish/rattling/noise but I don't want to spend $1-2 more and get less with a Honda Civic.

Well, in my opinion. I'd rather go with a Honda Civic with less accessories. Civic's keep their value so well. This is especially important since you take such a huge loss in buying a depreciating asset anyways.....Those accessories are nice to have, but not worth it if you can live without them.

Good choice. I'm thinking about getting one for a second car eventually. I test drove one and it was sweet, but the dealer would not back down much on the price due to their scarcity..One GT on hand and 20 GLS's
 
badluck - I agree, that's another option I'm considering. Of course if I were smart I wouldn't buy a new car now, just keep the current one until it dies or I can afford a car in 1-3 years.
 
civics keep their value well, but hyundai has a bumper to bumper warranty twice as long as honda, and a powertrain warranty 3 times longer. I dont think i'd buy one but they are making their mark in the market, its very impressive.
 
Any reason in particular why you don't like leather?

I've got black leather in my car right now, and we had several 90+ degree days this week and the leather wasn't too unbearably hot to climb into. Plus, with the heated seat option that I have, it feels great in the winter 🙂

This is my first leather interior in a car, and I don't think I'll want to own another cloth interior again.
 
The folks down in Shreveport are running an Elantra special right now. $10988 for air/power/am/fm/tape/side airbags/cruise/manual. Talked to them and told them what I needed, said they'd do $10988 including an automatic transmission and cd player (sounded really nice too). Wasn't for me, I was just doing some research for my little bro. But $11k for an auto on that car is killer. Too bad I didn't need one 🙁

There is a $750 rebate that expires on 4/30. Just a heads up.

Tanner, does it sounds like something is tapping in the back of your car? We had a similar problem like that, and the dealership relines the brake rotor and the problem goes away immediately. Might want to check with your dealership again about that.

The most annoying thing in the Elantra for me is the lack of accelaration on 1st gear. Felt a lot of torque, but no acceleration at all, even when compared to my rolla 🙂

I dunno why I don't like leather, I just think that cloth withstands the test of time better.

That's exactly what I want if I could get one with auto for around $11,000 I'd throw in the 10 year bumper/bumper warranty (and make sure that it's transferrable) for $900 making the total around $12,000 including license/tax/fees.

You guys think $12k is possible for the Elantra GLS (not the GT)?
