Credit cards have taken over the world, basically.

Due to the merchant fees, everything costs just a tad bit more. So unless you're using a rewards card like everyone else you're a sucker.

Then one day if you mess up your budget, get sick, lose your job, whatever, the CC company will be all too eager to start charging you 18-29% interest.

If you're smart, healthy, stable, its really do your benefit. If you're stressed, not in control of your life as much as you need, etc it could bite you.

The $450 fee is yearly, but it covers $300 a year in travel costs!

A great thing about the Sapphire is that it boosts the value of points earned with other Chase cards (the Sapphire preferred makes 1 point worth $1.25 for travel and the Reserve $1.50). That's a big deal because it makes points Chase unlimited/freedom cards worth more (you can transfer points amongst the cards).

Unfortunately I just got a Sapphire Preferred right before the Reserve came out, but in a few months I will cancel and switch.

I'm not a big spender (no debt except mortgage) and I earn about $1k/yr towards travel.
The $450 fee is worth a round trip to Bora Bora though, which if you paid on United, is over $4k.

Well that's not nice :coldsweat:

lol, they deleted the spammer that I was responding to. I thought this might happen with your post. ...I'll let it stand! :D

And that is one reason why one shouldn't respond to spammers. :)

One of the best perks of the Chase Reserve if you travel at all is the Priority Pass. I've been to a couple lounges so far and it's pretty awesome. The one at SFO I visited on Tuesday had free liquor, wine and champagne. Just bottles set out and you can pour whatever you want. Food was good too, ate a crap ton of free food. So much better than waiting at the gate. Now I actually want to get to airports early.

Credit cards are really only bad for people who can't control their spending or who don't have steady income. I use mine for almost every monetary purchase I make, and I get 1% cash back on everything. BAsically, everything I buy is only 99% of the price, which does add up over time.

Same. I always go a few hours earlier to experience the lounges now and I don't mind the occasional layover or two (no more than that, I did it once and by the third lounge I was already too drunk and too full).

It took me years before they would issue me a CC. I had no blemishes on my credit, I just basically didn't have any because I didn't already have a CC and I never bought anything on time, always paid in full up front. I had a full time job, I was doing fine, had no debt. It was a real catch 22. People said, get a card, something from a department store or something and establish some credit. All the time I already had gas CCs (this was before 2000), but that didn't help.

I finally got a CC. It wasn't long before I was getting offers from other CCs. After a while, I had to fight off the CC companies, the offers kept coming. Now, I have the most advantageous cards with the best rebates. Arguably, having several cards is more trouble than it's worth if you aren't financially stressed.

My perspective is this: APR means nothing to me because I never pay interest on purchases, etc. I always pay off my full bill at the end of the month and I do it with autopay against my checking account. I don't even have to think about it.

What the hell I never knew that the airport lounges had free booze. I always assumed they were just a room with nice couches and shit with a less crowded bar in there and places to charge your phones.

I just checked and my United Mileage Plus card has 2 passes per year into the United Club.

Not all lounges are the same. Some have better food and alcohol than others. I've been to some real shitty ones and to some grand amazing ones.

Check out the Amex lounges.

Damn that is pretty sweet. I don't really frequent any of those AMEX lounges though. I don't think my AMEX card lets me use their lounge either. I've been on a Chase Visa card binge the past couple years.

don't forget too... with the Chase Reserve Priority Pass, all your guests can get in for free too (may be limited to friends on the same flight as you)

Damn it that gave me hope my layover city had a PP lounge, but nope. Have only had direct flights since getting the pass. Arrival doesn't either, and departure was in another terminal. No lounge for me today :(.

About to take off right now.

This thread is back. Citi jtransfered $861.42 to my checking account last week from September cash back. Pure cash back/profit. No tax, nothing but cold hard cash.

Credit cards are good for you if you know how to use them correctly.

In regards to this thread, I am waiting until the right time to cancel my SWA Chase Visa and get one of the Sapphire reserve cards. I have an upcoming trip that I can use the $300 credit on travel to double dip with, but I need to make sure I'm going to hit the $4,000 in 3 months or whatever.
