Link to recipe? I'm always looking for new things to bake with my starter. Mostly I just do pancakes and an occasional coffee cake.

Did you start a wild starter, or receive/buy a daughter of someone else's starter?

I bought a sourdough starter from another ATOTer a few years back and gave it to my husband for Christmas. He makes the bestest bread for me!!

Thats the recipe although I followed the book and baked at 460F.

I made my own starter and used King Arthur all purpose for 5 days, then switched to whole wheat from the same company after reading that the micro organisms like it better. Two days later it was climbing out of the 4 cup glass measure.

I just put it in the fridge, but if you want to try this one I can dry some and send it your way in a week or so. Btw Hamelmans book is excellent.

I may try the recipe soon. I have my own starter, however. I received it from my father, who received his from my grandmother, who received it from her mother, who received it from her mother... and I can't track the history of it back farther than that. :)

It was me. :)
It was you!! Nothing like clandestine meetings in the park and rides of Seattle to furitively hand off bread starters in exchange for cold hard cash. ;)

linuxboy has kept that starter alive and happy and has made some fantastic breads from it. :)

'busa I'm having problems getting my starter to really do the job of the yeast in getting the dough to rise. I'm still having to put yeast into the mix. Any ideas?

I hope many a trenchcoat (with collars flipped out) were worn!

Fresh bread is fantastic. Possibly one of the worst things in the world for your body, but fantastic all the same.

Nice bread but next time don't jizz all over it before snapping pics.

Can one of you breadophiles fill me in on what "starter" is and why it's cool to have stuff in your food that "goes back generations"?

Starters involve allowing yeasts, whether store bought or natural, to grow by giving it a food source and some water and giving it a time to age before incorporating it into the dough. This imparts a desirable taste to the bread.

I've always wanted to try making sourdough, but it always seems too complicated. Maybe someday :hmm:
